Madrid is a very large city with several interesting side trips.
We went to Avila and Segovia. Avila is an old completly city and quite interesting. Segovia has a 2000 year old Roman aquaduct (stille in use) brining water to the city. Both worth a trip.
Both of the above side trips are good. Also consider Toldeo, about 45 minutes away. However, you could spend the whole time just doing the three major art museums and the Royal Palace.

When we were in Madrid we regretted not having been there on a Sunday morning. Everybody says that going to the Rastro (the flea market) is a must. If you're into bull fights, going to one would also be a possibility. For further general tips on Madrid, refer to (excuse me the length of the web address ... charge it to Fodors :-)

http://www.fodors.com/forums/crossro...ity=&active=5&

Paulo
