You shouldn't have anything to worry about as long as your flying Iberia/Amerian Airlines on one ticket.

Should be ok, "stay calm and carry on". The official website is http://www.aena-aeropuertos.es/csee/...id-Barajas/en/

if it is all on one ticket you will not be collecting your bags but be a passenger in transit.

All passengers disembarkng from your NYC flight will go through immigration passport control.

You will go through the "non-EU line, or "all other passports".
You will most likely have another security check so do not buy anything liquids over 100ml. until you are sure you are past the security check.

Then you will need to look for your flight. and gate and terminal. If it is more than an hour or so away, the gate MAY not be posted on the monitor yet, but many times the information people have that information already.

The signs to the areas in Terminal 4 are letters. Take an elevator instead of escalators when possible. it is much faster. Just follow the handicap signs. Most people are unaware that these elevators even exist.

If your carry-on is feeling heavy, grab one of the tiny carry on carts you may find near an elevator or information desk. They are a nice relief for your shoulder!

T4 has some very nice places fro a bite to eat and shop. There is also a Mc D's serving breakfast.

Enjoy your trip.

Typically, you can only check in 24 hours before departure, but if you are not registered with the airline (passport, etc.), you will have to wait until you arrive at the airport.
