Depends on what your interests are...

For most people, not-to-miss things would be:

The Prado Museum, which has one of the world's greatest collections.

The Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. Picasso's Guernica alone justifies the trip to Madrid.

The Thyssen-Bornemiza Museum. Minor works by major artists.

The area around Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor

Toledo (80 kms away)
El Escorial (30 kms away)
The Valley of the Fallen (even if some people call it a fascist extravaganza, it is an amazing sight)

There are tons of other things to do...
But then again... it depends

Retiro Park -- A beautiful park that will make you forget you're in the middle of a busy city.

Check out www.madridman.com - there is a lot of information about Madrid.

For me, the Prado is a must see. They also have buses that provide a hop-on hop-service for the whole day. You buy the tickets at the newspaper stands. If you are unsure of where to go, this is a good way of getting around.

The botanical gardens between the Prado and Park Retiro are also fabulous. The perfect place to unwind and smell the roses -- and all the other flora -- after a hectic afternoon in the museum. More peaceful than the park.

Also, a day trip to Segovia -- about an hour by bus -- is highly recommended.
