Madeira OR Tenerife OR The Azores
Good day all
Contemplating a trip to one of the above, possibly in October (TBD). Would love to take some beautiful hikes. I'm not a camper, but I could be a glamper (but would prefer a nice hotel). If you had a week plus change, would you pick one of the above over the other, especially in October (second choice January). I might or might not use part of my "week and change" with a few nights in Lisbon (or where the flight connects). Thanks! |
Not on your list but you might want to take a good look at Lanzarote; I wrote a trip report here and on HungryOnion.org. I've now developed an interest in Canarias which I never had before.....!! Maybe Tenerife next!
Take a good look at the weather predicts for Azores. |
eks, thank you! I am an equal opportunity island dreamer. I have been adding "new places" each year because if I did not I would happily make every vacation in France.
I'm doing well so far, Iceland a few years ago, Stockholm/Copenhagen last year, Maine this year... why not add one of the Atlantic Islands this year too. |
If you're in Lisbon prior to this part of the holiday, then the Azores is the place. We stayed on Faial in Horta and day tripped to Pico and Sao Jorge, then on to Terceira in Angra. There's hiking in all of those places, good food and nice hotels. Try the whale watching from Horta, although |October may be late for that.

Thank you Rubicund! I think I need to head to the library.

PS and EKS, thank you for the Hungry Onion - never heard of it before! Is that your handle there too?
|
Throwing another Canary Island into the mix - La Gomera. Or my fave La Palma, though the volcano eruption there is still impacting parts of the island. Both good for hiking and relaxing, and whether generally good in October and January, though it can rain, mainly at night, and even snow at altitude, in both.

My HUNGRYONION.ORG name is my actual name: erica1. I have a ton of posts there with pics, on eating in various places..mostly Spain and Italy.
I'd love to hear about La Palma, or which island to see next......no hiking, just scenery and food and swimming.....and good hotel not in a big charter-tourist zone... |
If you choose Tenerife, I advise you to stay in the north of the island (Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz). The south is very, very touristy and aimed at beach-goers and partyers.
Madeira is a lovely island, excellent for hiking and levada walks but I don't know about October. Might be a little late in the season. |
The weather in the Azores changes every few hours, so I'd not bother with worrying about predictions 4 months out.
Tenerife, the south is nearly always sunny, the north is nearly always cloudy Madeira has some great walks but take a taxi up to walk down |
Thank you for the tips!
