Not true. When my brother and visited the London Zoo back in 2008, we saw lions, tigers, chimps and other large mammals. All in all, it was quite enjoyable.

If you like bugs *shudders* you will probably like the zoo.
There are all sorts of meet the bugs events during the day where you can have a tarantuala, whopping great centipede etc crawl all over you (aimed at kids) *stops shuddering and passes out*
There are some lions and a great gorilla thing (I loves me some gorillas) but not much else of the big critters.
Basically if you're happy to see smaller animals and insects etc (and the buuterflys are great) then go. If you want elephants and tigers, give it a miss.

You can tell we are pretty much into zoos. We do visit zoos in many places we have traveled. Most zoos are phasing out the elephants because they need large places to roam and are really not happy in a zoo environment. The Bronx Zoo in NY will not replace their elephants when the last ones die out.
Pittsburgh Zoo is actually one of the few zoos that are breeding elephants and they seem to be happy there. In Philadelphia, the poor elephant looked so sad. We were so disappointed in that zoo (one of the oldest in America I think) because it was very sad.
So, yes we are not looking for the big animals in a small city zoo and he would be thrilled with the bugs. I on the otherhand, just take him to bug exhibits to make him happy but it is not my first choice. I feel itchy just writing about it.
