Maastricht ?

I'm driving from Luxembourg to Amsterdam and thought I would find a place to stop for a day and night. I've hear Maastricht is nice, but I can't find much info on it. Anyone been there? Any other ideas? I've also heard Aachen and Liege are nice...

Thanks,
Dave

I give it a thumbs up - - Aachen and Liege too - - see a recent post comparing Maastricht vs. Utrecht.

Best wishes,

Rex
Why do you need to stop when the drive in only 3 hours from Lux city, actually I have made it in four hours from where I live in germany. Amsterdam is about 150 miles or less from the dutch/belgian/german border. Maastricht is my favorite day trip area and hotels tend to be expensive as they have a very large conference center the MECC, try the Golden Tulip Inn, they were running internet specials of a double room for 45 euro but that special stopped 31 May. Have fun and beware driving in Amsterdam is akin to driving in manhatten or the dominican republic which are the 2 places in the world where I will not drive any type of motorized vehicle.

Thanks for the advice. My plan is to get rid of the car when I reach Amsterdam. My reason for stoppong over in Maastricht (or somewhere nice) is just to add something interesting to the itinerary and not to avoid the drive direct to Amsterdam. I'll have 3 days in Amsterdam - is a stop at Maastricht/Aachen/Liege worth it?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, a stop in Maastricht is definitely worth it. Maastricht is my favorite city in Europe. A great old city for just stolling around, with very old (ca. 1000) churches and a lovely old city wall. But is has great little shops also and a lively city square.

A very nice little hotel in Maastricht is the Hotel les Charmes. It is near the main city square and rooms are about $85 to $105 per night, depending on size. Here is the web site:
http://www.hotellescharmes.nl/uk/index.htm

My husband and I stayed in Maastricht for 2 days last spring while touring Holland.it was one of our favourite places.lots of outdoor places to eat, shopping, sightseeing .it is quite different from the rest of Holland and we loved the atmosphere. we stayed at a wonderful hotel above a gallery called Hotel Dis their web site address is [email protected] and they have pictures of the rooms and we booked online.it is worth the stopover.

Just returned from Maastricht. We stayed at the Hotel Du Casque (a Best Western), right on the main square. In spite of its affiliation with a large hotel chain, you would never know you were in anything but a small-medium local hotel. I cannot say enough positive things about Maastricht. Lots to see and do, very friendly people, charming city.

Thanks for the many suggestions!
Dave
