Lyon question - Mercure Lyon Wilson
 

What is this location like (Rue Mazenod); I need somewhere for 1 night, with parking, walking distance to old town. Website says 70 Euros for a room. Sounds reasonable?
I have not been to Lyon before.

It's near the a busy road along the Rhone River. You'll have to walk about a half mile over the Rhone, across the Presqu'Ile and over the Saone in order to get to the Vieux Lyon. You're not far from the Guillotiere subway stop. It stops at Place Bellecour then Vieux Lyon.

The area is fairly new looking, well, new compared to Vieux Lyon. :-) The roads won't be cobblestone and winding like the ones in old Lyon. One of the newer tram lines runs nearby. I've taken it several times to Part-Dieu. There are lots of little stores, shops, bars and such that I saw from the tram.

With a 70euro rate and parking I think it'll be fine. Parking seems to be very scarce the closer you get to Vieux Lyon.

If you walk over the Pont Guillotiere look for little pedestrian rue Marronniers on your left just before Place Bellecour. There are several nice little Lyonnaise-type restaurants down this street. I've eaten at 2 of the 3 Chabert et Fils restaurants and had great food at each one.

I've been to Lyon 3 times now. It's my favorite city in France to go to eat.

Indy has summed up the area pretty well. Central Lyon is pretty compact and easy to get around, and the walk to the old town isn't too far. I used to live near there (near Guillotière metro) and it would take me 10-15 minutes to walk to the old town.

However, if parking is what is governing your choice of hotel, bear in mind that there are a number of large multi-storey car parks on the Presqu'ile and the overnight parking rates are often very reasonable indeed (for example, the overnight rate - 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. - at Bellecour car park is 3 euros).

Thanks. I think we will do this. Probably easier to get to by car than Vieux Lyon.

Thanks for the info. Traveling on to the Cote d Azur with lots of luggage, so I'd rather have private parking. Hopefully we can spend more time in Lyon on another trip.
