The public transport system in Lyon is run by TCL (Transports en Commun Lyonnais - www.tcl.fr) and theirs is the "official" website. It's all in French though (unless there are some hidden English pages that I haven't found yet!). The metro pages are at http://www.tcl.fr/site/01_metro/index.asp

Thank you! I did find a metro map in the Green Guide but it does not show streets.

Well Mike, my husband is attending a conference at the Lyon Congress Center. The conference hasn't put up any hotel information yet and most of the hotels listed in guidebooks are down by the tourist area. I was trying to figure out if my husband could get to the conference center from the tourist area by public transportation but it doesn't look that easy. Do you (or someone) perhaps know of a hotel in the conference area? Thanks.

Hi Ronda,
The Lyon conference centre is at the Cité International site which is a new development located on the edge of the 6th arrondissement.

The plus points of the location are that it is right on the edge of the Tête d'Or park, which is a beautiful place for walks. And it overlooks the Rhône and the Croix Rousse hill, so there are some nice views and an airy, open feel to the location.

However as you have realised it is not exactly central to the main sites of the city. There is a Hilton hotel on the same site, with a great restaurant (terrace overlooking the park) and a popular casino. There's also a multiplex cinema.

There is a regular bus service (no 47) that links the Cité International site with Part-Dieu station, where you can connect with bus, metro and tram services taking you to most parts of the city. Bus no. 4 also goes to Cité International and connects with the metro line A which takes you to the main points on the Presqu'ile and terminates at Perrache station.

I stayed in the Hilton last weekend. It was an excellent hotel, very nice rooms and excellent staff. The Parc de la Tete d'Or was a very nice place to stroll. We played a bit at the casino which is small and smokey. The cinema right next to the hotel has english language films. I was underwhelmed with the Brasserie du Hilton. However, the Blue Elephant was excellent. There is another brasserie in the complex that seemed popular but we didnt eat there. There are a couple of snack shops as well.

As others mention it is not in the historic center but the area is very nice. To get to the historic center, we used our rental car which made it about a 5 minute drive. The transit system looked nice but we didnt try it.

Wow! I'm impressed! Great info. I would like to stay in the tourist area so we will be close to restaurants and sites in the evening. He could always take a cab to the conference center.
