Lyon, Macon, Avignon

What do you think about a river cruise to this area at Rue end of October, beginning of November?

Not the river cruise boat itself, but the idea of being there at that time of year. IMO, it’s a little too late in the season but I’m tempted.

Will the weather really be too cold, the landscape bare, et

I don't see any real problem. We've been in France as late as the second/third week in Oct (last year, & 2016 in Paris) - and it was quite pleasant. We've been in Provence in early Oct & it was fantastic. Don't get too far into Nov.

I came off a river cruise in Basel in December and took a train to Lyon. It was quite pleasant in December, although the days were short.

We have been in this area several times in mid Sept. and in Paris Sept. & early Oct. with perfect weather but we were concerned that Oct. 28th to Nov. 7th would be too cool & rainy.

Since weather is a big factor, especially on a boat, we’re waffling.

Be prepared to everything:
dry and sunny weather,
nothing but rain and inundated areas along the river,
icey winds,
or a mix of all.
It's just not possible to predict November weather in this area.

My impression is that a river cruise on the Rhone is mainly for the convenience. The river is large, the valley fairly flat south of Lyon, it won't have the charm of a canal cruise. The cruise starts in Lyon and goes north to Macon and then south to Avignon?

Personally, I would not take a river cruise at that time of year in that region, but this may be colored by the fact that we had some of the harshest November - February weather this year that I can remember (and I'm in a much more temperate region). Others know a good deal more than I do about what to expect in that part of Europe these days, though.

There is a large amount of ugly commerce on the Rhone. Nuclear power plants also.

Michael, yes you are right. The cruise starts in Lyon, then goes north to Macon, then south to Avignon.

Stu, the ugly commerce doesn’t sound picturesque in any way.

Thanks for all your thoughts. They confirm what I was thinking and we’ll probably take a pass this time.

Actually a month earlier and driving around is more our way our way of traveling. We’ll continue to do research.
