Lyon hotel choice

Choice between hotel des Artistes rue Gaspard Andre(84E for standard room( ), Hotel Residence 18 rue victor hugo (70E for superior room) and Hotel Le Phenix quai bondy(120E). I sanyone familiar with all or any of these to compare hotel and/or heigborhood? Looking for nieghborhood feel with wine, cheese, pastry shops as well as comfortable room and warm welcome. Well don't I just want it all. I've seen posts on the first 2 hotels but no comparison & can't find anything on the Phenix. Thanks.

I can't help you with personal hotel recommendations, but as for neighbourhoods then either Hotel des Artistes or Hotel Residence would probably fit the bill. Hotel Phenix is on the banks of the Saone near the top end of the old town. I'm not sure whether you'd get that neighbourhood feel there... there's a lot of traffic along that road, but then there are lots of smaller winding streets behind.
Personally, going by location only, I'd opt for Hotel des Artistes as it's the most centrally located of the three, relatively speaking, and is neatly tucked away on a pretty square. But wherever you are in Lyon, you'll find cheese, wine and pastry shops, cafés and residential streets.

We stayed at Hotel des Artistes in May 2003. It was very nice and I'd stay there again. Location was super.

bowserjoe: I have stayed at the Phenix and although it is not in an inconvenient location it is rather a dicey area. As we were talking in the reception area at about 11:00 p,m, we saw quite a bit of foot traffic with couples going in both directions in and out of the hotel, (whatever that indicated). We were also asked by a friend who lives in Lyon why we chose to stay there as it would not have been her selection. It was clean and comfortable, however.

Sorry, rorry, sorry! the hotel I just told you about was not the Phenix. I can't remember what it was but my husband reminded me that the Phenix was having some renovations done and was actually very nice. Please do not hesitate to make a reservation there. It is in the old city and a handy walk to everything. Lyon is just great.
