Lyon from Geneva & Lyon Driving questions

Approximately how long of a drive is it from Geneva to Lyon, and what is the quality of the road? Also, what are the driving conditions like within Lyon - tourist friendly and easy to navigate, or just the opposite?

While we didn't drive IN Lyon..we picked up our car at the airport after our stay..I wouldn't say it was as bad as Paris or London, but I wouldn't do it. Lyon has an excellent transportation system, metros, trams, buses, taxis, even a funicular. And it is also very walkable.

Hi tbjr,

Sorry, never driven this route (don't drive in Europe).

But I just wanted to let you know that the train from Geneva to Lyon is easy (direct, 0 changes) and quick (1h50). From what jody says about public transport in Lyon, I would consider ditching the car.

Lyon has an excellent metro, tram and trolleybus network, and the connections from Geneva to Lyon are frequent and fast. The road is also the usual French four-lane haighway. Depending on your plans I would really suggest to take the train to Lyon and not to drive in the city.

It is about a couple of hours drive, mostly in excellent motorways, about $70 in tolls/gas plus the cost of the rental. The economics tell you that train/public transport is the smart way to go. I spent some time in Lyon, traffic is heavy, ditch the car.
