I have been to both cities few times for business,it is hard to say which city is better, all depand on your interest. Generally speaking, the weather in Barcelona shall be warmer at the first part of April. About the views of city,in Barcelona, the strange but absorbing architecture by Gaudi and Sagrada Church are very stunning. However, the Renaissance part of Lyon and Notre Dame are worth visiting too. Lyon is proclaimed the gastronomic capital of France. I have had many excellent meals with half the cost of paid in Paris, but the seafood and tapas bars in Barcelona are very good also. The accommodations in Lyon are much better value than in Barcelona. For sidetrips,I think there are more alternatives from Lyon, you could go to Grenoble,Annecy,Veinne, Dijon or even down to Provence.all within 2-3 hours train ride. For centuries Lyon is the texture center of France, the shopping is very good. Safetywise,Barcelona has bad reputation;in Lyon, except near Part-Dieu station,I always feel safe to walk alone day and night. Both cities have many museums,I believe there are more choices in Barcelona.

"Hotel des Artistes" (tel: 0478420488,fax:0478429376) is the best value one I have ever stayed ($45.00 per night, clean and quite room, no breakfast). Right in the centre of Lyon, across the Theatre, within walking distance to all the sights and good restaurants 2-5 minutes walk.
About side trips, for exemple:by train: Vienne 20 minutes; Dijon:2 hours; Annecy:1 1/2 hours, Avignon:2 1/2 hous.Since Lyon is the major transportation centre, it is very wasy to go everywhere.
