Lyon, France - Hotel & Sights - any suggestions?
 

We will be travelling to Lyon and Paris in July for the first time. There is lots of wonderful info on Paris but very little on Lyon (at least that I have seen!). If you have been there and can recommend somewhere safe and clean to stay I would appreciate it. We would prefer to spend under US$100 - B&B is fine or hotel. Location is important as we will be doing lots of "touristy" things! Any advice on where to go and what to see? Thank you in advance, Fiona

Was in Lyon about 2 years ago. Excellent food first, I must say. I stayed at the IBIS (University Location) for about $70/night. IBIS is the same chain as NOVOTEL but less fancy.
Try them at 1 800 NOVOTEL

Make sure you take a walking tour (available at the tourist office and ask if the guide speaks English, that is if you don't speak french). Got to see some hidden treasures and entry into various traboules to see the archeticture.

Found a promotion through Greater Lyon Office du Tourisme called, "Bon Weekend a Lyon" - over 40 hotels offered two nights for the price of one on Friday and Saturday nights (when the business travelers clear out). We stayed at the 4-star "Hotel Royale" right on Place Bellecour - our quiet room on the top floor, with balcony overlooking the Place and views off to the basilica on the hill, was terrific. All for what ended up costing less than $60 per night! Staff could not have been more helpful. The promotion also offered 2-for-1 rates on guided tours, boat tours, etc. Webpage: www.mairie-lyon.fr
