Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I appreciate it.
SalB I am in Indy. I usually work in Indy and live 45 minutes south but I always check Cincinnati's airfares and schedules. Delta and Air France code share and have two flights to Paris each evening and two returning every morning. I was able to get non-stop roundtrip for $495 this time. It's well worth my effort and my Dad's to drive the 1.5 hours to Cincinnati's airport in order to save the layover in Chicago, JFK, Newark, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas...
Hi dln! Double composting was new to me too. Never before have I bought more than a round trip ticket at a single time. When I booked this itinerary I was expecting 3 tickets to print: 1 Dijon to Besançon, a 2nd from Besançon to Dijon, then a 3rd from Dijon to CDG.
Instead there were only 2 tickets. The first ticket had Dijon to Besançon on it. The second ticket had in the first slot Besançon to Dijon for that evening, the second slot on the same ticket had Dijon to CDG for the next morning. Now that you mention it the ticket agent looked at it a little funny when he read the tickets. I don't think he expected it to print like that either. That's when he told me I had to compost the second ticket twice.
As I mentioned I was expecting a disaster, but it didn't happen. When I left Besançon I composted the ticket the first time. The next morning I composted it a second time. Both times the ticket was checked by a conductor. Neither time was there even a raised eyebrow. I did purposely put the ticket in the composter differently the second time so there would be two distinct compost marks.
FauxSteMarie, I know, I know, I need to rent a car more often. But those little pichets du vin at lunch seem to force themselves upon me and before I know it I don't even want to think about a car.

Thanks for an interesting report. You are an excellent ambassador for Lyon!
I remember reading in an earlier post of yours that you would be in Lyon on May 1st - as we were wandering around the Presqu'ile that day I wonder if I might have walked past you!
The reason that the museums were so crowded on Sunday May 2 is not because it was the first Sunday of the month (that's a Paris thing, I think), but because it was "le Printemps des Musées", a European initiative during which all museums are open for free.
Incidentally, I wonder whether the sign you saw in the bar in Dijon ("please use proper toilets" wasn't asking people to leave the toilets clean? (propre = clean). Just a thought...

Indy, great report, lots of fun to read and informative too. But I'm confused by your review of the Hotel Dubost...specifically with the "Two trash cans!" comment. A little cryptic...is that your personal hotel rating system? Would a rating of three trash cans be better or worse than two trash cans? ;-)

Hi hanl,
We probably passed each other a couple of times on the pedestrian street between Places Carnot and Terreaux. Thanks for the explanation about the museum openings. I didn't see any signs explaining why they were "gratuit" so I assumed it was a first Sunday of the month thing.
Hey there BTilke,
You'd think that the more trash cans a hotel room gets rated the worse it would be. It's not that way for me. I find it annoying to stay in a hotel and find one tiny trashcan in the bathroom. The one so small a single pop bottle will fill it.
If I find two trashcans, one in the bath room and one in hotel room I'm thrilled. I can actually organize and throw stuff away without having to take it all to the bathroom and have it overflowing in a few minutes.
I'm always surprised at how much crap I accumulate during the day: ticket stubs, flyers I want to try to read, receipts for items I paid cash for, museum pamphlets, photocopied pages of guide books I won't need anymore, used Metro tickets, empty water bottles, used train tickets. I try to pitch stuff as I go but it still builds up.
If I find 3 trash cans in a room I'm in heaven.

Slow day at home today as I couldn't go to work due to flooded roads in South Central Indiana.
I decided to back up and add some photos to an old trip report.

Hi, I came across your nice trip report and read it with great attention especially the Dijon part of course.
I just wanted to say that a lot of things have changed since your last visit in 2004.
-the Cathedral next to the archaeological museum, St Benigne with its crypt had a very good front renovation, it was so dark and dirty with pollution before…
-place Emile Zola is pedestrian now with more terraces and even a fountain
http://www.ville-dijon.fr/scripts/fi...mp;id_info=849
-The tomb of the Dukes of Burgundy has been renovated last may.
-Place de la liberation in front of the ducal palace is being changed into a nice place with light colour pavements, no cars allowed to park around it anymore. The street of the Magnin museum is going to be pedestrian in 2 or 3 months along with others going to the Place. But from now on already cars are not allowed to access to the place
http://www.ville-dijon.fr/scripts/fi...mp;id_info=217
-the front walls of the ducal palace have been cleaned last year and they are now white instead of dirty beige.
-There are very nice walks from Dijon port to the Kir lake called la coulée verte. (along the Burgundy canal)
Dijon just received « le grand prix national des villes et villages fleuris. »
pff exhausting but I had to say it all!
