luzern day trip
We will have 2 1/2 days in Luzern in November and were thinking of spending one day on a scenic train trip - but where? We'll also have a car so are we better to forget the train and drive somewhere?
|
Does it have to be Lucerne in November?? Cold and probably wet, with cloud likely to be covering most of the scenery.
If possible consider somewhere South of the Alps, for relatively milder weather conditions, say, Lugano, Lake Como or even Montreux on Lake Geneva, which also offers scenic day trips.

I agree with Tony about clouds and weather. However, if you're going to be there, it's a 1 hour train ride to Interlaken and another 20 minutes to Lauterbrunnen and spectacular mountain sights.
Mary: Drive or take the train (on the Lucerne-Berne line) through the most scenic "Entlebuch" to the "Emmental", where the real Swiss cheese (Emmentaler) comes from.
This is really the heart of Switzerland comparable to the Appenzell. Lovely hills, beautiful farm houses, unspoiled nature. Stop in Langnau and I bet you will find it hard to find somebody who speaks English. You will, in case you neeed it.Don't worry.
You will discover a completely unspoiled and most typical quaint Swiss place.
If you are interested in some other scenic spots, have a look at
www.luzern.org
With bad weather, do not go up a mountain, it's wasted money. You will not see anything but fog and rain (or even snow).
Do also visit the Swiss Museum of Transportation. One of the most interesting museums in Switzerland, right outside the town at the lake.
Have fun!

Good morning, Mary
As Ursula mentions if you have a cloudy
day don't consider going up to the top
of any mountains, you mostly be in the
clouds and have very short vision. The
suggestion of Emmenthal might suggest
the abbey at Einsiedeln. It would be
about just over 3 hrs to Lugano which
mostly removes it from a day trip out of
Luzern..... Senic train trip might
be from Luzern to Brig which would be
about three to four hours depending upon the route. If you get an early start
and reach Brig by noon, another hour
you are in Zermatt, there have lunch and
after short sightseeing, return by rail
to Brig and to Luzern. There is much
scenery over this route..
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..

Mary,
Consider a train ride to Engelberg.
~1 hour from Luzern - and the whole ride is beautiful...first valley then "cogging it" up the mountain to a very pretty town.
http://www.engelberg.ch/

Consider a stop in Stans (along the route) while you're at it.
http://www.stans.ch/
Tony: It's cold and wet now in JULY!
We had to put the heating on... and it will continue for some days. Just watched the forecast. :-(
Hopefully, it will change until November.

To everybody: Please do never ask for weather again, it can be everything!
|
The shortest travel time between Luzern and Interlaken Ost is 1:54 via Meiringen.
That is probably the most scenic route because it goes via Sarnen and the Brunnig Pass.

I second the idea on the Transportation Museum. Very well done exhibition.

If you are going to be in Switzerland in November, I think the sunny side of the Alps is the place to be: the Ticino.
Maybe not rain--but snow. We were in Luzern in late November 1999 and were greeted with 3-6 inches of snow. It made the city charming.

Re: day trip--if Zurich is not on your itinerary, it is an easy day trip from Luzern by train or car!
