Luxury hotel in Edinburgh

Hi all,

I am planning a long weekend with a girlfriend in Edinburgh at the beginning of December. I have been checking rates, and I have seen good prices at the Missoni hotel and the Scotsman.

I wonder if someone has stayed at either of them and what could you say about them.

We wouldn´t mind a nice upscale B&B, but it should be someplace in New Town, I think, because we are only staying for 3 days, so I would prefer not to be very far away from the town center. A friend recommended me a place in Leith, but I feel it is a bit far away, specially given that we are talking winter.

I have been a couple of times to Edinburgh during the Festival, so I have stayed in B&B´s and hostels, and this time we wanted to splurge a bit.

Thanks,
Cova

You won't go wrong with either of them. Missoni is brand new whilst the Scotsman is in the old Scotsman newspaper building

DO however take the time to walk up - or down - the Scotsman Steps which are quite remarkable

I have stayed at both within the last year. They are both very nice. The styles are totally different.

The Missoni is in a converted modern office block. Very stylish and new.

The Scotsman is also (as Alan said) in a converted building but it's the emblematic Scotsman newspaper building- all gothic scrolls and twists.

Personally, I prefer the Scotsman, but it's marginal. I do like the Scotsman Brasserie, and I haven't eaten in the Missoni. They have kind of sublet a bit of the building- separate entrance- to Ondine, and it's been getting a great name.

The Scotsman has more facilities- pool gym etc. Rooms on the north side have fabulous views over Prices Street gardens etc.

We will be in Edinburgh later this month, and are staying at Tigerlily. I would totally have chosen the Scotsman, but it was not available for our dates.

Tigerlily has gotten good reviews, so you might look into it as well.

14 Hart is an excellent B&B. We would not hesitate to stay there again nor to recommend it to friends.

Did you now? And when was that trip (never saw the trip report) ? The Marriott West in in a really lousy location for touring Edinburgh. It is good for the airport though. . .

What was the view of -- surrounding homes, the Shell station, or the Morricson's supermarket next door?

Sheila, Alan and all ... sorry for not coming back earlier, but, as always, real life is complicated and I haven´t been around a lot.

Right now we are between The Scotsman and One Royal Circus, tending more towards this one. Completely different places, big hotel vs small B&B ... Old town vs New Town ... spa vs piano in the drawing room ... It is more expensive, but I feel that it has a lot of positive things and reviews in tripadvisor are quite good.

We are deciding sometime next week, and I´ll be coming back later on asking about restaurants and so on. Both of us were born in the Basque Country, so we are talking serious food here ;)

Thanks to all, Cova
