Hi. We were there for 5 days last year and I have to give my solid vote to Positano. Its a wonderful very Italian home base where you feel the least touristy and the restaurants are awesome. Big enough to keep you interested and quaint enough to appreciate the location.

Stayed in Hotel Marincanto with a wonderful view of the ocean on the main building. they also have an infinity pool which is a great luxury and a very satisfying breakfast every morning. The hotel has a private stairway that leads you to the bridge and onto the town or catch the ferry for all the other islands. The hotel performs way better than what is rated for. Your daughters will love it.

Sorrento is too big and too busy. Capri is an awful copy of Rodeo drive. Ravello is pretty and can get pretty boring. Amalfi is worth the visit only if you want to see the Grotto and cheapest place to acquire the tourist crap obligatory purchases ie dried porcini, spices, etc.

Thanks for the laugh zmzm917! Great and very accurate descriptions! Particularly of Capri.

We visited Positano in June and had a lovely stay at the delightful Poseiden but I wouldn't describe it as a luxury hotel. Budget is a key component here. If you have the money you can organize private tours and drivers to Pompeii etc with little difficulty. For an informed crowd on very high end properties I'd look at the luxury hotel forum on Flyertalk. For some of the properties you've mentioned the hotel IS the destination
