Luxury Edinburgh Hotel?
 

My husband is away on business in the North Sea for months. I am going to meet him in Edinburgh in November to celebrate his birthday. Can anyone suggest a centrally-located, top-drawer hotel in Edinburgh? We are 50 and money is not a huge consideration as it will only be for three nights. Any suggestions welcome. We are open to hotels or B&B, etc.

The Scotsman or the Balmoral.

Unless you want the "Scottish Experience" - lots of tartan and a guy at the front door in a kilt - I'd be tempted to try somewhere like The Howard, Tigerlily or Ten Hill Place.

There's also been a big boom in apartment hotels in Edinburgh over the past few years - Royal Garden Apartments, Holyrood Aparthotel, Chester Residence come to mind

The GlassHouse a sort of very upmarket B&B gets a very good name,very central but is next door to a huge entertainment complex on one side (Omni Center) and the Playhouse Theatre on the other

What about the new Missoni hotel on George IV bridge? Haven't been there but it has been much covered in the press, and the location is excellent.

this is another new hotel,used to be the labs for the SNBTS but was converted to a hotel recently,looks very nice ,but i have not been inside yet.

We have stayed at The George Hotel several times. I always feel as if I was dining on the Titanic when I am in its glass-ceilinged dining room. It's very conveniently located, Victorian, very Scottish.

I second The Witchery

I third the Witchery. It's right at the top of the Royal Mile and the restaurant is excellent (book in advance with plenty of time to get in)and is one of the best in Edinburgh.

The Balmoral is, objectively, the best. I haven't stayed there. The Scotsman and the George are both really nice. If you go for the George ask then for a top floor room facing north. The views are to die for. The Scotsman is quirky and fun.

I like the Glass House in some ways, but the lay out is bizarre and it's less well located.

I agree about The Balmoral. IMO The Witchery has too much attitude and not nearly the class that The Balmoral has.

Any recent updates on these? We will be in Edinburgh for two nights in June. Right now, The Glasshouse (for the roof terrace), The Scotsman (for the location and tradition), The Bonham (for the price and the art), and The Howard (because it just looks beautiful) are my top choices and I am having a really hard time deciding.

I know the Glasshouse and the Scotsman and I would pick the Scotsman of them

I don't know and am not attracted to the Howard or the Bonham.

The Glasshouse is fine- although it's got a bizarre layout. The rooms are, I think, marginally nicer than the Scotsman. Location's not great- but we're talking about 500 yards here. so nothing to lose sleep about.
