Luggage Trains Questions
 

On trains from Prague to Austria or Budapest, where is luggage stored? I know when we were in Spain and France it was either stored in a rack above our seats or on a main rack between rail cars. Is a train from Prague to Vienna really 5 hours? Are there no fast trains as in Spain and France? Many have suggested taking an overnight train but 5 hours is not much sleep especially if you are awakened at border crossings for passports. Wouldn't you then arrive in the city very early am, almost too early to do anything with luggage at a hotel? Obviously I am missing something. Anyone have a rough cost one way from Prague to Vienna?

First of all, there are no AVE or ICE-like services between these two cities and yes it takes that long.

I would no do an overnihgt on this route.

You are obviously concerned about having to spend what you feel is an inordinate amount of time traveling between these two cities, correct?

Luggage is stored either above the seats or sometimes in racks at the end of coaches..but I would suspect on this route it is the usual above-the-seat or under-the-seat routine.

Re topman: generally in Europe we drive or take a fast train. However picking up a car in Prague and depositing it in Vienna has posed a problem with most car companies. Five hours by train does seem a waste of time for me but this may be our only choice.

Yes: Prague to Vienna by day takes 5 hours 40 minutes. That is 410 kilometers at 72 kilometers per hour. The train slows down to give you a full night in a sleeper. You board at Prague Hlavni about 2250, leave at 2315, and reach Vienna at 0703.

As a matter of fact, using that site I see that there are four daily direct trains from Prague to Vienna that take approximately 4 and a half hours each.
