Luggage storage at train station
 

I travel with a laptop. It's the trade-off for three weeks in Italy. Was going to go with rental car but many suggested taking the train was easier. Wanted to stop off and see sites between hotels. For example, in Assisi on the trip down from Florence to Rome or in Pisa or Pompeii. How is luggage storage at train stations handled? Is it like a coat check area, where someone takes your bag and gives you a claim check, or is it an area with lockers? If lockers about how large are they and is the area monitored? Thanks for your experienced responses.

At Italian stations, it's always a manual left lugguge office, not lockers. At a few bigger stations, they're open 24 hours a day, but smaller stations will have more limited hours. There is a fixed charge for the first six hours.

Most of the smaller stations won't have luggage storage. For services available, select a region, then servizi in stazione, then city.

Pompeii has their own storage facility at the entrance and it's free. www.pompeiisites.org

That is intriguing. Someone is offering you 3 weeks in Italy, but only if you take a laptop with you? :)

IIRC there is luggage storage at Pisa.

There is luggage storage at the entrance to Pompei Scavi and at the train station in Assisi.

At Pisa, the luggage store is slightly hidden. From the main entrance, facing towards the track, turn left and you will find the dtore at the end of the platform. When I last used it (October) it cost €3.50 per piece of luggage for up to 6 hours.

It is basically a large shelved secure room. The attendent takes in the luggage, puts it on a shelf accepts the money and gives you a token or ticket. You will also need a passport - the attendent will copy this and attach the copy to the luggage.

There used to be lockers at many stations, but these were removed or disabled because of worries about bombs.
