Luggage at the train stations
 

My family would like to take the night train from Rome to Milan to catch our flight back to us at 9 am next day.We will have our luggage with us after we check out of hotel in Rome until the train leaves at night from Rome Termini. Does any one know about the storage facilities at the train stations? we could also leave Rome after checking out and spend the night at Milan before our flight but were trying to skip the hotel cost. thanks for any suggestions.

most large stations will have left luggage departments where they will charge you per item. I seem to remember around €4 a piece for up to 12 hours was the rate. They will want a photocopy of a passport as ID to stick to the luggage.

Can you leave your luggage at the hotel? They usually have a luggage room. You could come back for it later. Many train stations in Europe have closed their baggage storage areas due to security. This happened to me in Montpellier, France.

I would go to Milan the day before.

Unless you plan to sit in a seat (if that is even available) a couchette or cabin sleeper will cost extra from a regular ticket (off setting somewhat the hotel cost concern).

Italian stored luggage facilities are very secure. The problem at Termini is that the line is veeeeeerrrrrry long and you could wait hours to check your luggage unless you hot foot it over there quite early.

Asking your hotel to keep you luggage is a good idea, provided you do not have a ton of it and the hotel is not a teeny b&b.

But what you really ought to reconsider is whether you want to take the night train from Rome to Milan. Night trains in Italy are not reliable, and they are quite uncomfortable.

A very nice way to end your vacation is to take the train to Milan, then switch trains for the town of Stresa in Lago Maggiore. If you have time, tour the Borromei Islands or just have a nice dinner by the lake. In the morning, as early as 5am, a bus will take you to Malpensa Airport. Just make the arrangement ahead of time with your hotel.

I take it that you are not planning on changing trains in Bologna at 03:00.

The 23:01 night train gets you to Milan at 07:15.

You are unlikely to get to MXP before 08:30.

You will most likely miss your 09:00 flight.
