luggage allowance AA and BA
 

We are flying American airlines to london from Boston, staying a few days, then BA to amsterda., Then a week later BA back to London and American home. (This is a straight thru flite - with no more days in london, just a few hours between planes). Got the ticket thru AA with miles. AA says their baggage allowances apply, even on BA flights. anyone know if this is true? any experience with this?

Since there is quite a difference in what they allow for carry on and checking would like to be sure.

I wouldn't trust some BA gate agent to interpret AA's rules on the fly. I'd phone BA to make sure what theire interpretation is on codeshare or connecting flights' cabin baggage rules would be, then I'd opt for the more conservative of the two if they differ.

I would check with BA about this. There was a thread recently about a AA-BA baggage situation. BA is quite strict, and if you cannot find a straight answer (and that is possible, different agents will tell you different things I've found) I'd do the BA carryon limit (13 lbs) to be on the safe side. Better safe then sorry is my feelings on this subject.

Even if you DO get the answers from BA I would ask them if the information is anywhere easily accessible and downloadable. If so, I'd be sure to have a copy with me in case there are, in fact, any "misinterpretations" by check-in or gate agents.

I suspect the response, "But they told us such-and-such when we called" might be greeted by the usual, "Who did you talk to?" (as if they really care!!!).

I would definitely go w/ BA's limits. Even if a BA customer service agent tells you "the AA rules apply" - that does not mean the gate agents in London and Amsterdam will permit it.

You will be at the mercy of the local staff - and if your carry on is over the BA limit you might have to check it. This can be a real problem if you have things like medications, film etc that should not ever be checked.

Just be on the safe side and pack as though the whole trip were on BA.

As a BA crew member, you can try taking your carry on all the way through. The limit in Eurotraveller class on BA is one small bag, no more than 6 kgs (13lbs) but it can depend on aircraft size. Amsterdam flights are usually small 126 seater airbus. If it's a busy flight, then the staff will apply the restrictions and your bag may be hold loaded, so don't pack your passport/medications/anything you may need for your transit.Club class is 2 bags/18kgs (40lbs) Hope you have a good flight!

thanks for the info and you are able to check only 1 bag, not more than 50 lbs I believe. or is it still 2.

gail uk, I am so glad you identified yourself as a BA crew member. Please tell me what is the reason for the severe weight restriction on carryons?

We currently cannot fly BA because our photographic equipment makes our carryons too heavy, even though the size complies with all airline restrictions.
