Ludwig Castles

We will be in Bavaria in May. Right now we have 5 castles on our to see list - Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Linderhof, Neues Schloss and Nymphenberg. I think we will be castled out and want to cut out a couple. Which ones are the must sees?

I would choose Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and Hohenschangau. Many would tell you that Neuschanstein is not worth it for the interior, which is true, but the setting is perfect. Hohenschwangau is right next door, so it's easy to see and Linderhof is not far. When at Linderhof, make sure to go up to the grotto. At N-stein, go up to the bridge for the best view.

I visited them all last summer.

Nymphenburg is more of a palace and is on a tram line in Munich.

I would keep all except Schleissheim Neue Schloss, which was the least impressive.

But that's me, and I like castles and palaces.

Like Gabriel, I think that you can skip Neue Schloss, but I would add Herrenchimsee (it is on a small island between Munchen and Salzburg0.

I agree Herrenchiemsee is a very interesting trip. It was inspired by Versailles. Just be aware that Ludwig ran out of money when building it and it is unfinished.

Here's a website that might help you decide among the various options.

gforaker - Thanks for the tip on the grotto at Linderhof and the view at N-stein.

gabrieltraian and valtor - We will skip Neue Schloss and may add Herrenchimsee.

Vttraveler - Thanks for the link to the castle web site.

I haven't deleted any castles but after looking at your posts I think we most likely will do all them.

Herrenchimsee offers concerts in the evenings. If they have any when you are there, it is a nice experience. Take a boat late afternoon to the castle, tour, concert and late evening return.
