Ludlow, Hereford or Abergavenny?
 

If you were to spend two nights in one of the above towns which one would you choose? Why? Thanks for any comments.

I've spent a week in Ludlow each of the last 2 years & love it. We were there primarily for the Ludlow Food Festival (www.foodfestival.co.uk) & to eat in each of the (then) 3 Michelin starred restuarants (the sadly defunct Merchant House, Mr Underhill's & Hibiscus). But it's a lovely town generally - pretty little streets with mediaeval & Georgian houses, a market, good pubs, a castle right in the centre, a river, nice walks in & around & plenty of other scenic places to visit. We visited Hereford on a day trip & while the cathedral etc was interesting, the town seemed a lot larger & not so charming. We've also stayed in Abergavanny for a couple of days & I'd say it's nice but doesn't have so much going for it as Ludlow. Go to Ludlow, during the food festival if you can still get accommodation, and have the surprise tasting menu at Hibiscus - our meal there last year was the best I've ever had. Last year we rented a cottage, Abalone House, which was very central & beautifully furnished.

I totally agree with caroline.Ludlow it self is a wonderful small market town with great shops, the castle, walks and for a very nice short trip outside I would recommend a visit to Stokesay Castle. It was one of our favorite spots on a trip a few years ago.

Be sure to make reservations at Mr Underhill's and Hibiscus. I join caroline in mourning the passing of the Merchant House..they had the world's best bread pudding! My DH was awarded with a second serving when he told the waiter it was the best thing he'd ever eaten!
We stayed at a B&B called No 28 or something like that. It was 4 or 5 individual houses and then you went to the main house for a wonderful breakfast! I don't know if it's still operating but if it is I would highly recommend it, too.

We've also done hereford and Abergavenny..but Ludlow would certainly be our first choice.
