Lucerne to Rome on Swiss pass

I will be traveling from Lucerne to Roma termini on Sunday, June 11. I will have the Swiss pass. Do I need to purchase a ticket for the Italian portion of the journey? If so, what would be the station info and where would I purchase? Trying to find out what the cost would be. Thanks

Yes - from Domodossola to Rome - seat reservations are required on all but regional trains in Italy and come with the ticket - www.trenitalia.com - official site of Italian Railways. And check them for Lucerne to Rome tickets - discounted tickets could be very cheap for the whole trip and save a day on your pass- may even be cheaper than Domodossola-Rome ticket!

For lots about Swiss Passes and trains and Italian trains-www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

If you do not have an Italian ticket in hand buy one for the Italian portion at Lucerne's train station - show them your pass and ask just for border station to Rome.

Also check www.sbb.ch -Swiss Railways for Lucerne to Rome discounted tickets - will you most likely in any case to have to change trains in Milano Centrale - a huge hectic at times station so leave ample time between trains - there are lots of eateries and cafes, etc in the station in case you need to while away time -better than missing your connection if you leave little time to transfwer.

You might be able to get one of the international super saver ticket from Lucerne to Milan, but there is only one departure (16:18) with no train change. Other departures are available, but with a change of train in Zurich.

ah yes border station for Italy from Lucerne is indeed Chiasso not Domodossola as I said - for some reason thought from Interlaken.

Try for discounted tickets and if not use your pass to Chiasso =have Italian ticket so you can stay on the train.

Thank you all so much! Exactly the info I need. I have seen the 16:18 from Lucerne to Rome for €9. I'm concerned about the 15 minute change time in Milan especially after reading your comment palenQ. Big risk as I have a hotel booked in Rome that night and this particular journey gets to Milan at 7:45pm, leaves at 8:00pm and arrives Rome at 10:50 pm. No room for error!

I believe that with a discounted ticket that are train specific if your train coming in is late you can board the next train - subject to their being seats - not sure but believe so.

You may ask the conductor on the train to Milan which platform in Milan to head to - there are zillions of them and knowing which one would speed up process -conductors usually know that.

Hard to believe that you could find a 9 EUR mini fare for the whole Lucerne - Rome journey.
15 min for a train change at Milan is very tight (as mentioned in the electronic Trenitalia timetable BTW). It's not unusual that trains get some delays between Chiasso and Milan.
The very last Rome bound train leaves Milan at 20.20.

I am seeing conflicting information for when the Super Saver fares become available. Somewhere I read that you cannot buy train tickets until 90 days out. Then I saw something that said super Savers are only available 30 days out. Does anyone know which is accurate? Today is 90 days out for the start of our trip and I want to go ahead and get the tickets that I need. Thanks!

Generally 90 days I've read - let the experts confirm that.

I'd pay more than 9 euros to get to Rome earlier and have more time to connect in Milan.
