Lucerne, New Years
7 of us are traveling from Salzburg to stay in Lucerne for New Years. We have 3 nights there. Welcoming any and all suggestions. Staying at the Grand National (over the Palace)- any comments there? Thanks,

I don't have great dining recommendations, we didn't research that before we went..
but we did enjoy climbing up the Museggwall for a beautiful overlook of Lucerne, and we took a short lake cruise to Weggis and back, very relaxing and scenic. The old town has some painted murals on a few of the buildings, so it's neat to see how many of them you can find. You can rent bikes at the train station and maybe get a map/route around the lake. The first time we were in Lucerne was 1996 on a tour and we went to the folklore show - that was good touristy fun.(I think it was at the Stadtkeller on Sternenplatz).. And we took the funicular/cogwheel up Mt Stanserhorn, although it fogged in at the top. Switzerland has a good online site for tourist information: http://switzerland.isyours.com/e/gui...rne/index.html |

If you want an elegant meal(and don't mind paying for it), that well prepared and beautifully served, consider the Old Swiss House. Their Geschnetzeltes (like beef strogonoff, only better), Roesti and deserts are especially good. Extensive wine list.
The Stadtkeller luncheon or dinner show, mentioned above, while hokey, will be fun and entertaining. The Swiss boat music cruise on the night of the 30th also is fun. See shuler's link. |
