Lucerne/Luzern restaurant help please
Hi guys! I had totally arranged my trip when my husband announced that he wanted his birthday dinner in Lucerne! I booked a room at the Continental and am searching for the perfect spot for his special birthday dinner. The terrasse dining looks great at several restaurants, but if it rains...ummm. Has anyone tried the Wilhelm Tell boat? It looks quite good. I also had a positive review on the Old Swiss House, but it has no views. I really need views and atmosphere for this special dinner as we always try to outdo each other on birthdays, lol! Thanks for any help!!

Hello LLindaC :)
We've took a paddlesteamer sunset dinner cruise once for my birthday, departed Luzern and cruised over to Vitznau, and then back. We had a window table with tablecloth, waiter service (salad bar was buffet but the rest was by menu). Very nice! Beautiful sunset views over the lake and mountains. This was on the 1st class deck. Happy travels! |
Good grief. "we've took" should be "we've taken."
I think the fumes from the orange furniture polish has gotten to me..ugh. back to housecleaning. |
I can highly recommend "des Balances" in Hotel des Balance, right in the Old Town, at the Weinmarkt.
Excellent cuisine, modern, trendy ambiance. Reasonable prices. |
If you really try to outdo each other, I think he'd have trouble topping this:
http://www.rigi.ch/en/navpage-Summer...WVR-52166.html Dinner served in the cablecar suspended between Weggis and Rigi Kaltbad. They call it "dinner between heaven and earth". Can't beat the view! |

holy cow, enzian....
I found a real deal on the "chateau" which is now closed for renovation, but they have one suite with a terrace, champagne roses and a 4 course meal for only $1,500. Nah, not this year! Rick had his birthday dinner one year in Gruyeres with a view of the castle and he still talks about it. We are arriving on my birthday...I'll probably be asleep by 4, lol. |
Dinner in the Rigi gondola is most unsual but you have to reserve it for a group.

What's happening these days at the Chateau Gutsch on the hill? I haven't been there for a while and not sure what is happening, but both food and views used to be wonderful.
I'd avoid the boat except as a last resort, or if you really don't care about eating steam table quality food just to get the boat atmosphere. I had a spectacular birthday dinner at Old Swiss House a few years ago. No views, but the tableside prepared foods, the service, and everything else made up for that. I guess, I tend not to be looking out the window while I'm eating anyway. |
The Gutsch is going through a major renovation and they plan on reopening as a luxury hotel in 2011.

Gee whiz, am I feeling small now. Guess that's why I don't generally talk about food here. Different strokes, I suppose. Happy Thanksgiving! |
quit advertising on my thread...shoo!
I don't think the Wilhelm boat is the same as a sunset cruise, as it is stationary. It doesn't have buffet/steam table food. It is mentioned in the Michelin guide. |
