Lucerne in November
 

I am going on business trip to Southern Germany mid/end of November (15-23) flying into Zurich. I will spend the first 1.5 days in Zurich and after the business I will have 2 full days in Lucerne before I fly back to US from Zurich. What can I see around Lucerne at that time of the year? I will have a rental car with me. I understand that the cog train to the top of the mountain runs only till beginning of November and same is for a boat rides on the lake - stops mid October. I love mountains and snow covered peaks. What scenic ride around that area would you recommend if the weather is clear? Thanks

Most mountains can be visited all year round, as the cable cars and cogwheel trains operate all year long. And its a good idea to go to the mountains, as in November it's often foggy and cold in Luzern, while in the alps, its sunny and warmer!

The closest option is Mount Pilatus, which is reached by 2 cable cars from Kriens. Kriens is one of Luzerns "suburbs" and an easy 15-min bus ride fro the city centre away. The cogwheel train which goes from Alplanchstad to Mount Pilatus will be closed.

The second option ist Mount Rigi, reached by cogwheel trains from either Vitznau (at Lake Lucerne) or Arth-Goldau. Most visitors take a boat ride from Luzern to Vitzau (4-5 daily), the cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm, the second cogwheel train to Arth-Goldau (hourly or 2-hourly), where a "normal" train brings you back to Luzern (every 30min). A special ticket for the whole journey is available. If you prefer going by car, you have to go back the same way back, of course.

My business portion of the trip is near Memmingen, Germany, which 1.5 hours from Munich or 2.5 hours from Zurich. I choose to fly via Zurich and will be vacationing 2 days before and 2 days after the business portion. I don't think I hinted anywere in my post that I thought that Zurich is in Southern Germany, but sorry if I gave you that impression.
