Lucca to Nice

Hi,
I Have been on the trenitalia website trying to get some info on the Lucca to Nice train trip for July 18th 2011. Nothing is coming up for this date so I looked at earlier dates (the latest that comes up is the 10th of June) to gage the time and price but haven't had much luck. I get the train and times but no prices and a N/A message is there. Does this mean the timetable past the 10th hasn't been released? and all the earlier trains are full? Am I best to book this trip on a different website? Can you help me understand what is happening?

A big thanks, Ami

It's because Trenitalia won't show prices for the slow R trains except within 7 days. Lucca is only served by the slow R trains. Also, summer schedules aren't fully loaded yet so current schedules are only through June 11.

Great, thanks for the reply.

So how is one to book these slow R trains when they do become available if they give you no price?

Cheers ami

For a price, use a date in the next seven days. But there is no need to book them online in advance, just buy them in Italy.

R trains do not have reserved seats, so no need to book in advance. Just buy a ticket and get on the next R train to your destination.

>>>For a price, use a date in the next seven days<<<

That won't work. You have to enter the last station in Italy (a date in the next seven days) to get prices. Trenitalia isn't including the price if the train crosses the border on this route. Ventimiglia is the last station.

You can book part of this in advance and possibly snag some discounts if you divide your trip into sections that are just on IC or ES trains although with so many connections, I'm not sure I would (savings are not that much as this route is only about 30-40€). If you enter Viareggio to Ventimiglia, check to see if any mini fares are available once summer schedules are loaded. You must validate your R tickets in the yellow boxes track side. ES or IC tickets don't need to be validated as they are for a specific train/seat.

If the train ticket, usually at the top, says "DA CONVALIDARE", then you have to validate the ticket before getting on the train.
