Lucca to Cinque Terre

I am thinking of staying in Lucca for a few days and driving/railing around Tuscany. Is it an easy one-day trip from Lucca to the Cinque Terre and back, or would that be stretching it? And would it be best to drive to La Spezia and then take a train to the Cinque Terre?

There are several trains daily from the Cinque Terre to Lucca. It takes a little over 2 hours to get there. All trains go through La Spezia, stopping in either Pisa or Viareggio, then arriving in Lucca. If you went to Lucca early in the morning, then returned to the CT after dinner, it is feasible. However, you will be spending a good portion of your day traveling, not leaving much other time to explore beautiful Lucca and its magnificent city walls. IMO, it would be stretching it to attempt seeing Lucca as a one-day trip.

La Spezia is one of the main stations that services trains into/out of the CT. It connects the CT/Ligurian coast region with Tuscany. However, you can also take a train down the coast (coming from the north) and then into the CT.
