Lucca or San Gimignano?
 

My husband & I are planning a trip to Italy which includes 4 days in southern Tuscany (San Quirico) & 3 days in the north. Looking for a village experience, I am wondering which one Fodorites would recommend: Lucca or San Gimingano? We will have a car & plan to take day trips to see the countryside. What do you like about the village of your choice? Any recommendations for hotels up to 200 euros/night?

We haven't been to Lucca, but San Gimingano is a really nice small town and very peaceful after the day trippers leave in the afternoon. After three days in Florence it was refreshing to stay out in the countryside.We stayed at the Hotel CisternaPiazza della Cisterna, 23 - 53037 SAN GIMIGNANO39 0577 / 940328, which was well under 200 euro and right on the town square.
Just remember that in Tuscany nothing is free.

I vote for Lucca. San Gimignano is nice with all it's towers and pottery, but I love the walled city with all the shopping, being able to bike the ramparts, and my favorite dining experience ever (Trattoria de Leo), I have to say Lucca.

Where are you staying in San Quirico? We love the Palazzo Capitano. Have a great time!

Haven't been to San G, but I have been in Lucca. From the pictures of San G and what I know of Lucca, I would also vote for Lucca. Ditto

Yes, I also liked Trattoria de Leo. Also Ristorante Giglio, Canuleia and Osteria Baralla!Ditto to what Krissy said.

I've been to San G on a day trip and to Lucca overnight. While they're both good-sized rather than small village style, I also think Lucca--for charm, for fine dining, for ancient city walls (though not towers), for less of a "crush" trying to walk around--is your best bet.

I stayed at La Romea for 2 weeks this past August. I loved my stay there. I stayed in the Ivory room. The breakfast was delightful and the owners are very nice and helpful. I highly recommend it!
