Lower Cotswolds, England - Luckington Village
 

We are planning a trip in April to England and will visit the Cotswolds. My DH is hoping to include a stay at Bridges Court in Luckington Village.

Why, you ask? He has read a great deal about British Intelligence and really wants to stay at this house - the former home of Sir Stewart Menzies (the former head of MI6 and the person on whom Ian Fleming's "M" of James Bond fame was based).

My specific question is - will Bridges Court work as a base for the lower Cotswolds? I'm thinking we could have one base in the Upper Cotswolds - perhaps Broadway, Chipping Campden, Moreton-In-Marsh and then move South to Luckington. Perhaps stay in Luckington 2 nights before returning the rental car to (?) and heading into London for a few nights. Can we make Luckington work? Life is compromise and I don't won't to disappoint him! Thanks for any tips on this area of Wiltshire.

It looks to me to be a great location since you'll have a car. You might consider Bath in the south and Moreton-in-Marsh to pick up/return the car since both have train service.

I picked up and returned a car to Bath and found it was easier to leave town from the outskirts after picking it up than it was to find the place again on the return. So if you pick up a car there you can take a taxi from the train station and leave without having to go through the town which is a confusing place to drive. But very nice to visit.

Luckington would be convenient for visiting places like Bath, Castle Combe, Cirencester, Lacock, Tetbury, and Painswick. The village itself is small, so you may have to travel to find a good evening meal and other facilities, but there are some good village pubs in the area. I note from the Wikipaedia entry that there is no mosque at Luckington, a not unusual situation with small Wiltshire villages.

My only caveat is that Luckington is very near Badminton House, and the Badminton Horse Trials take place in early May. They can cause a lot of traffic and pressure on accommodation, so this would be something to check with the owners at Bridges Court.
