Lovely hideaway in Scotland (just about?!)

Hi,
We are looking to go over to Scotland for a few days in September as a first time away from our little son (nearly a year old!) We would love to stay somewhere very comfortable bordering on the luxurious but not too far into Scotland. A b & B or a hotel, it doesn't matter. Any recommendation would be great as we have spend hours trawling through internet pages to no avail
Thanks!

Take a look at Traquair House, down in the borders:

Sorry to answer a queston with a question, but when you talk about coming "over" to Scotland, where will you be arriving? Plane to Prestwick ("Robert Burns Airport"), overland from England? How far is "not too far" into Scotland? These questons will narrow down the areasof the country you're likely to be interested in.
Just outside Kelso in the far south of Scotland, Roxburghe House Hotel is wonderful but definitely luxurious rather than just bordering on it. Likewise the Cameron House hotel at the south west corner of Loch Lomond - can be reached from Prestwick airport but a long way if you're coming from the border.

We'll be travelling up from Sunderland (where hubby's parents live) so will be driving and we don't want to have to drive too far as we want to make the most of our time with walks and lots of good food etc
Any ideas???
Thanks!

!0 years ago my husband and I stayed at the Cromlex hous e in Dunblain,Scotland. Absolutely beautiful! We had a car rental and drove several times to Sterling(Sterling castle),Edinburgh and mant other country drives. This was a great base and a romantic and perfectly"scottish" experience. Wonderful although very formal and expensive dining room. Breakfast in the morning room was a lovely and delicious treat. Even keep "wellies" in the entry for those muddy days and walks in the country. Highly recommend the Cromlex House. Do a google serach for it's location on the web.

Best of luck!

Cromlix near Dunblane (sp) is about an hour's drive north of Edinburgh so would be quite a trail if you want to get there from Sunderland in a day. Traquair as suggested by Underhill would be worth checking out. There are several other good hotels in and around Peebles, choice would be largely a matter of taste. The location would suit your requirements as it's reasonably near the border and is good walking country.
Wherever you end up, have a great trip.
