Louvre: Must sees
 

Under a separate post someone mentions doing the Louvre "must sees" but doesn't suggest what her "must sees" are. Recommendations anyone?<BR><BR>Lucinda

Lucinda, there is so much to see there, it really depends on your tastes in art. You can't go wrong, no matter what route you take!<BR>A few of our favorites:<BR>*Winged Victory of Samothrace<BR>*Roman and Greek sculpture<BR>*Napolean's Apartment<BR>*Philip Pot's tomb<BR>*Medieval fortress<BR>*Venus de Milo<BR>Etc., etc., etc.<BR>

My personal favorites: the Italian paintings including Mona Lisa and the other paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, the French Crown Jewels, and The Marly Courtyard in the Richelieu Wing. I also enjoyed seeing the ancient Louvre, the Medieval fortress built by Philippe Auguste in 1190.

ditto the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The Egyptian wing.<BR>The Italian painters (the students that are copying the famous paintings- great to watch).

Get a copy of Rick Steves' book "Mona Winks". It lists all the must sees in Europe's top museums and is written in a fun, light-hearted manner.

Here are my favorites (in no particular order):<BR><BR>* Mona Lisa (admittedly because it's a general must see!!), Wedding at Cana (same room, probably one of my favorites just because I've spent so much time studying it while my guests wait to see the Mona Lisa)<BR>* Liberty Leading the People<BR>* Winged Victory<BR>* Frescos from Pompeii<BR>* Michelangelo's slaves, Canova's Eros & Psyche (same room)<BR>* Stele with Code of Hammurabi (one of the earliest written codes of "law")<BR>* Tablets with writing in cuneiform<BR>* French crown jewels, including the Regent, the world's most beautiful diamond (and one of the largest)<BR>* The tile wall from Babylonia with a lion (I'm not sure what it's called, but it's in most guidebooks)<BR>* Braque's ceiling, since it's the only 20th century artwork in the Louvre<BR>* Botticelli's Venus & the Graces

Just a note All the must sees are in the same wing of the Louvere.
