Louvre Couture Exhibit

Has anyone been to this exhibit? It sounds interesting and I would love to hear comments if you have seen it. Secondhand comments are fine too.

No but I am hoping to see it in July so I will follow along here.

We are planning to go. We tried to buy tickets online but they don't seen to offer timed tickets for the exhibition. It's included in your general Louvre admission ticket. Hmmm....that sounds like it could be really crowded.

WeisserTee, thank you. I hadn't gone far enough into the booking to realize that. May I ask when you will be in Paris? We will be there the beginning of May. If you are there before that could you let me know your thoughts on the exhibit?

We are going in June, so you could let us know your thoughts! :)

A week-end in May is earmarked for Lugano (gorgeous in spring) and also for staying here in Basel over Eurovision Song Contest week, so we can watch the madness from home -- plus we want to see what Graham Norton says about our city.

WeisserTee, I will report back! I had to google Lugano. It looks spectacular. Maybe a brief trip report? I would love to see your photos.

Will do! We have been going to Lugano at least 3 times a year (3 hours on direct train from Basel) for over a decade. My husband used to have relatives there.

Thank you!

Gomiki, I'm listening to Lindsay Tramuta's latest podcast. She and Amy Verner went together to see the exhibit and they have a lot to say about it. So far I've learned what defines haute couture and that it was hard to read the labels at the exhibit. More to come.

Coquelicot, thank you! Waiting for the more to come.

I will be there on the 4th and will post my thoughts.

jan47ete, I will look forward to your comments. Thank you!

Gomiki, here are some notes I took from the Lindsey Tramuta podcast.

The exhibit was extraordinary in its novelty.
Ditto in its scale.
Sprawling.
Difficult to navigate.
It’s easy to miss certain pieces.
Labels were very low and people had to hunch over to read them.
Apparently the exhibit tries to juxtapose the garment with the relics in the wing where it’s displayed, like a Balenciaga dress called the armor dress near an actual suit of armor.
99 pieces, I think?
They liked seeing the pieces up close.
When Lindsey and her friend visited there were no programs left. They didn’t have a map. They weren’t sure if there was an audio guide but it would have been helpful.
It brings people into a part of the Louvre they might not have seen before.
Sorry, I only remember a few designer names–Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford or maybe Tom Brown, Chanel. They mentioned others like Yamamoto who I’m sure I never heard of.
They also talked about the Louvre's need for renovations and structural improvements.

Coquelicot, thank you! I really appreciate your synopsis of the podcast. Not sure what to think. I'm looking forward to jan47ete's first hand report. It was very kind of you to take the time to report back.
