Hi - looking for hotel suggestions in Venice. We'll be there 4 nights in late March, 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Looking for a three star, clean, safe, comfortable in a location convenient to St Marks, Grand Canal, etc. We are not adverse to walking or taking public transportation but don't want to be 20km outside of the city. Would like to keep the budget around $125e/room if we end up with two rooms or $250e/night if we can find a quad/family suite. Thanks!

I was recently in Venice with 2 of my adult children and we stayed at Locanda Barberigo, and we enjoyed it very much. It was about a 5 minute walk from the Grand Canel, and less than 5 minutes to St. Mark's. We did see a family of 5 come out of one of the rooms at breakfast. Our room was 190 Euro, including breakfast.

I'm not aware of all current rates, but try searching right here by name for such popular hotels as Bernardi, Ala, Accademia, La Calcina and Wildner, to name a few.

We recently were in Venice and stayed at the Hotel Giogione which I would recommend highly, but their rates are higher than you mentioned.

However, another hotel that was on our short list when trying to decide was the Hotel Ala. We passed by the hotel one day and it is in a lovely, quiet little campo in the San Marco district, just a few minutes walk from San Marco Piazza.

There was also another hotel across the campo that was also lovely--the Bel Sito. The location can't be beat.

Do a search on both these hotels, and you will find lots of input.

The 4 of us stayed in a quad at Hotel FLora in March '01 but I think at that time it was closer to $300.

venice is fairly small, and most areas on Venice proper are walkable.

but if I were you & the teens get along, I'd try for 2 rooms so you get 2 baths & a bit of space & priavcy. The Galleria Hotel at the foot of the Accademia Bridge is often mentioned as a well located place for 100-130e/nite. Better though I think is their newer place. I think it's near the Ca Rezzonica (museum) & may be called by that name.

Pensione La Calcina: Lovely 3-star, have stayed there twice. Great location on the Guidecca shipping canal. Central yet quiet.

Keep in mind that in the Italian hotel rating system, a one or two star hotel could actually be nicer than a three star. For example, even the most exquisite hotel can never be anything higher than a one star if the entrance to the hotel itself is separate from the check-in area. So do some careful research and ask a lot of questions, and you might be able to find a great deal in a two-star property.

I stayed at the Pensione Guerrato near the Rialto Bridge two weeks ago. I paid 85Euro for a double room with a shared bath. A private bath was 95 Euro. It was nothing exciting but nice, well-priced, and in a great location. It was a 3 minute walk to the Rialto Valporetto stop and 10 minute walk to St. Mark's Square. You can book online at their website. There is a discount if you show the Rick Steves book, which is somewhat embarassing but a savings nonetheless.

We (6 of us) stayed at the Hotel Giorgione this past December, and we all loved it. Definitely would stay there again. It was clean, quaint, and staff was very helpful and friendly.

Our family stayed at the Hotel Ala a year ago and we all loved it. We are 2 adults and 2 teens as well. We had two connecting rooms. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Location was great, and it was was lovely - pretty, clean and well run. The breakfast is good as well. We would return in a minute!

thanks so much - I've looked the various hotels up on the web and sent requests for availability to them. Its the personal experiences with these places that will influence our decision on where to stay. I'm allergic to mold so musty places are difficult. Thanks again and keep the ideas coming.

It has been mentioned a few times above, but we really like the Ala and highly recommend it - hospitable, very nicely located and it has a great breakfast.

We are planning on staying at Locanda SS Giovanni e Paolo. We got a deal for 120E per night, I believe it is normally 135E during high tourist season. They have a website with all sorts of helpful information. And they have a great location! I have found a lot of reviews online over the past couple of days and only one out of about 12 was negative. It said to request an upstairs room that is not above the kitchen because I guess the kitchen was a bit noisy getting breakfast ready in the morning.

A hotel gets a star for each of certain "amenities" it offers, not quality issues. Rufus gave you one of the "amenities." Another is whether there is a restaurant. Etc.

I stayed at the Pensione Accademia last Thanksgiving with my wife and two teenage daughters (Dorsoduro 1058, 30123 Venezia tel ++39 041 5210188 fax ++39 041 5239152).

We requested a quad room but what we got was a 2 bedroom 1 bath suite on the ground floor just off the lobby. The main bedroom was very large with a queen size bed, large wardrobe, dresser, and sitting area. The second bedroom was very small with two twin beds, small closet, a dresser and very little unoccupied floor space. Both rooms were beautifully appointed and the set up worked great for us.

The hotel is on the grand canal only a short walk from St. Mark's. The staff is knowlegable and helpful with directions, recommendations, and reservations. I can't remember what we paid, but would highly recomend this hotel if it fits within your budget.

Another vote for the Hotel Ala. It was clean, comfortable, nice bathroom, and great breakfast. The location is very cental. I would also recommend 2 rooms if you can swing it (mainly for the extra bathroom).
