My dh and I (60's) are going to Copenhagen for a split week next August. ( We are hoping to spend one night in Malmo, Sweden in the middle of the week. ) Can you suggest a clean, private accommodation (no sharing) close to transportation? We are on a budget so under $100 a night would be ideal. Thanks.

Well august is probably the lowest rates of the year - since all business travelers are on vacation - either in the country or southern parts of europe. But US$100 in Copenhagen is still really inexpensive.

I don;t know how many options Priceline has in Copenhagen - but it might be worth looking at.

Separately, I wouldn;t move to a hotel in Malmo unless you have some very specific reason to spend the night there. It's cute small town - but frankly not that much to see or do.

Clean, well located. I was by myself and my room had bunk beds. I didn't care since I wasn't using the other bed but I remember the beds seemed very narrow so the top bunk could be a problem. And I thought their breakfast was a rip off (so only took it one day, other days I just went to nearby cafes). It's very near the train station and Tivoli Gardens. I was able to walk everywhere in the city from there. I would stay there again.

There is no low season as such for CPH hotel rates, it's a year round place. I've never seen a hotel for under $100, not even the Cabinn City, which is very slightly over that. Try B&B or a hostel, although both may involve sharing bathroom facilities. Try hotels.com or similar sites, since booking this far ahead there might be advance purchase/non refundable/prepayable rates for some hotels which could make it cheaper.

You might give Airbnb a shot. https://www.airbnb.com/s/Copenhagen--Denmark We have had great results here in the States, and one in Milan.

Be sure you check for lots of positive reviews, and ask the landlord(s) any clarifying questions you might have before you book.

After considering all the options, I chose the Clarion Collection Hotel Neptun for $273 a night. I found some nice apartments on the sites that were recommended above but most had small beds which we find difficult. This will be the first week of a 6 week trip and I didn't want to start out being tired from not being able to sleep. Do you know of any reason why we shouldn't stay here? Wow, this is an expensive city!

All of Scandinavia is very expensive - as is Switzerland.

For a more budget vacation - consider entral europe or perhaps portugal.

If you are going to spend $273 a night it might open up other hotel choices, for example the Admiral. Did you check out the Wakeup Hotel, location is not bad, near the Marriott. They have different room sizes. Or the Square.

Odin: Both hotels claim to have double beds which I understand to be 140cm. Am I interpreting that incorrectly?

Last time I was in Copenhagen, two years ago, I stayed at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers near the airport. It was a really nice 4* and they have a free shuttle to and from the airport. I paid $92 a night using hotwire.com. The only drawback is it is about a 25 minute train ride to central Copenhagen. This wasn't a real problem because the Train/Metro stop is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel and the hotel front desk sold tickets. Here is a review I wrote on Tripadvisor:

It is too early to book now. If you are interested in getting a hotwire deal, you should probably wait until 60 days out. If you are unfamiliar with Priceline or Hotwire, go to betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com and they have lessons on how to bid and how to identify the hotels. You don't bid on hotwire, but others who've gotten the deal will post their successful results and you can see what hotels they have.

The doubles at the Square are 160cm according to their website, same with the Wakeup hotel. Couldn't see bed sizes at the Admiral but would think it the same, best to check though. The Admiral has quirky rooms, as it's a converted warehouse so some rooms have beams in odd places etc.
If the bed frame is 160cm it could mean that there are twin mattresses in that frame with a single double sized sheet over both mattresses and two duvets, one for each mattress. The Marriott has the usual American style rooms/beds but it can be pricey.
