Looking for Suggestions for our first European trip

Our son is studying abroad in Switzerland next year and we want to plan a family trip during Christmas holidays spending a week in Switzerland and visit Italy and France for another 12 days. Looking for tips and suggestions to help us plan our trip to include travel, hotels, cities, etc.

First things first: start looking at a map and start readin guidebooks to narrow down your interests.

Agree - there are a wealth of options.

Will Switz be a skiing/winter sports holiday?

Besides that do you want to head for southern Italy for a more moderate climate? Or are you looking for big city glitz - like Paris - when the weather will probably be more conducive to indoor activities.

Do remember that days will be very short (dark from 4 pm to 8 am) and chilly rain and/or snow are likely unless you head to the most southern part of europe.

It should be a magical time, but as mentioned, dark early. Need more information about your interests. If you've never been to Europe before, surely Paris for at least 5 days.
A couple of days off of Switzerland might even make your overall trip more inclusive and interesting.
We also need to know if your timeline of 7 (a week) and 12 more is really 19 days ON the ground or total, including arrival and departure days, which are pretty much a loss as far as doing much.
