I have just returned from Italy where I spent 10 nights at the Imperial Hotel Tramontano in Sorrento.
Loved the hotel. It is historic, full of old world charm and well maintained. The staff was helpful and friendly. My room had a large terrace (room 214)--almost as big as the bedroom--with spectacular views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Not all rooms had terraces--some had Juliette balconies and some had balconies just large enough to hold a table and two chairs.
The breakfast buffet offered many choices and I especially liked their fresh fruit salad. Their dinner menu also offered three different choices with appetizers as well. The hotel is located on side of cliff but within easy walking distance of old Sorrento, restaurants and shops. The Bellevue, mentioned above, is next store. From Sorrento I did day trips to Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Naples, and Salerno. If I have to say anything negative about the hotel is the rooms are not sound proof so one can hear the guests in next room.

I just returned from Sorrento and loved my stay at Maison Le Minervetta. It is a boutique hotel w/ only 12 rooms, perched on the cliff 300 steps up from the Marina Grande. The walk into town was a very pleasant 10 min. walk.
We absolultely loved the views from the room, its modern comfort, impeeccable cleanliness and great friendly service. Awesome great room, lobby and terrace. Also the breakfast was excellent and included eggs made to order.
We got a rate of 297 E.

I second NYTraveler's recommendation of the Excelsior Vittoria. It has the best of both worlds. It is on a cliff overlooking the gulf and is set in its own lovely grounds (once part of an Imperial villa), yet its gate opens onto Piazza Bra, right in the heart of Sorrento. There are many restaurants, cafes, gelaterias and shops from which to choose. The Ex Vitt also has its own private elevator that will take you down to the little marina below. Be sure to ask for a sea-view room as the views are stunning.

Since you can afford it the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria http://bit.ly/3uvQgG is great, it's one of the leading small hotel of the world, citrus groves, sea views, proximity of the town. Great Italian experience...
