What is wrong with you people? kodi is one of the nicest Fodorites ever. Troll? Give me a break!

Hi kodi, glad you had a great Italian dinner. We ate simple food when we were in Paris and loved just about everything. I loved the baked chicken and chicken kebabs. On the first afternoon we walked to the "famous" bistros in the Latin Quarter, looked at the menus and walked on. We ended up at the Cafe Bonaparte and loved our simple meal. I found out later that is was one of ira's favorite places.

I don't have a lettuce allergy per se, but too much of it causes me problems as does watermelon and cantalope. I rarely eat salads away from home. There's little prediction of when/if it will upset my stomach. I never thought of the water connection between those foods.

If you like ham and cheese order a Croque Monsieur. Frittes (french fries) are always good. And be sure to follow lenny's advice and buy some macaroons at Laduree.

If you like rich ice cream be sure to go to Berthillon on the Ile St Louis

I will simply have to stay longer than 4 more days so I can go to all these great places. I think I just walked in the wrong direction last night. I did see many great looking places today and love the Italian place. It's called Marinara , located at 46 rue Dauphine. I recommend it.

Did you say ice cream, Jo? I did read about Berthillon and will have to try it for sure.

Kodi, I am so jealous that you are there and I am not. I am sure you have gotten enough ideas and I am not familiar with the Marais but one thing I have not seen mentioned (I don't think - don't flame me if I missed it, nice people) are the crepe. There are stands everywhere. You can get fromage (cheese), fromage et jamon (cheese with ham) or aux champignon (mushrooms). I think I've spelled those correctly. Also, croque Monsieur is like an open faced grilled cheese with ham. Yummy!

If you get anywhere near the Pantheon (beautiful) try one of my favorites -La Fourmi Ailee (sp) at 8, rue du Fouarre, Saint Michel, Paris. It is a tea room and full of books. It is just charming and a great place for lunch.

And St Cirq, funny you think nobody cold be allergic to lettuce. My almost Aunt-in-law is very allergic and cannot eat it.

Kodi -

I am glad that you are finding something to eat and your post is helping me find some restaurants when my sisters and I go in Sept. I don't like all the fancy meals and can get by with chicken and potatoes or steak and fries. My sister has a hard time with food so I am glad there are some restaurants to add to the list.

Have a fantastic time and a save journey home!

Kodi, I know you're not a foodie, but just in case, and for anyone else, if you are brave, there is a really fun place to try in the 15th. They don't have a website but it is called La Cave de l'Os a Moelle. Read the review below. It really is wonderful You need reservations but you sit with whoever else happens to be there. Food is served Family Style and it is all you can eat

There are 2 nice supermarkets on Rue de la Verrerie, between Rue de Temple and Rue de Renard - a monoprix and a Franprix

There is also a great farmer's market tomorrow morning:
Marché Baudoyer
Location: Place Baudoyer
Open Wednesday from 12:30 to 8:30 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
Metro: Hôtel de Ville

"There are just about as many Italian restaurants as French restaurants in Paris. It is considered to be a part of local cuisine, just like Italian food in the U.S."

That is why I love Swann et Vincent!

Kodi, glad you found something good.

DebitNM Jun 17th, 2011 07:04 PM

Sorry, those 2 markets are past Rue de la Renard, about a block or 2.

Kodi,

I have to be careful what I eat and need to choose rather plain foods. Favorite restaurants in Paris have included Au Lys d'Argent on the Ile St. Louis, La Croque au Sel near the Eiffel Tower (not sure it's still there) and Cafe Louis Philippe. DH had a great steak with frites on a rainy afternoon there. We returned another trip and it was just as good. We also like the cafe at the Museum Jacquemart Andre but they might serve a lot of salads (haven't been in 4 years so can't quite recall). A good fallback is Brioche Doree for sandwiches.

Keep reporting the places you like so that I can try some of them in October.

More Great responses... thank you so much. Deb, I did find those supermarkets last night. So I can eat breakfast in my apartment.
A correction... The italian Restarant, Marinara, wehre I ate is in the 6th not the 1st. I'm learning !
I'm sure glad I'm not the only one who just wants to eat good simple meals.

mamcalice Jun 18th, 2011 03:57 AM

I think we all like good, simple meals from time to time and I also think that some believe French food to be fussy and complex. If you don't go for haute cuisine, you can always find simple, delicious meals. If you like seafood, try Fish La Boissonerie in the 6th.

Scootoir makes another good point: museum cafés. I remember the one at the Petit Palais as rather nice (and it's free to go in).

"I'm sure glad I'm not the only one who just wants to eat good simple meals"

kodi, I think a lot of people do. Perhaps they don't post a question like yours because of all of the "foodie" threads, but most of the people I know choose simple over fancy due to a mix of factors - time, money, stomach issues, or just personal preferences. I had a friend who thought she didn't want to go to France because she didn't like rich food, wine and was terrified she'd order something off the menu and get organ meats. She was especially terrified of ordering brains by mistake :-)

Wouldn't it be funny if your thread became on of the classic helpful threads on this board - especially considering the snarky posts you got at the beginning?

Our big splurge in Paris was lunch at Jules Verne at the Eiffel Tower. It was wonderful! The rest of the trip? Simple, basic foods that were wonderful in their own way.

Enjoy Paris!

kodi Jun 18th, 2011 12:31 PM

It's so good to know I'm not the only one. I agree with your friend.. I'd be scared to death of getting organs too. I had brains once, but spit it out when I was told what it was. YUK. I'll repeat what I said earlier..... it's good to know there are friends out there willing to help. I appreciate it.

avalon Jun 18th, 2011 01:13 PM

My DH only wants to eat organs! Liver, kidneys, brains, tongue , sweetbreads, whatever. I really prefer a good steak frites or boeuf Bourg or a fish! We have never had any problems finding some where that satisfys both our preferences! There are menus posted outside of most bistros , if you can't find something move on to the next!Chicken is about the LAST thing I'd order in PAris,I am not that fond of it at home!

DebitNM Jun 18th, 2011 01:22 PM

While we would have loved to eat croissants, pain au chocolat, etc for breakfast every morning - we ate simply buy picking up some excellent yogurt, fruit, a fresh hot baguette [ok, we couldn't resist all that goodness]juice and coffee which we had in our apartment.

For lunch,we finished the baguette, had some cheese, or ham with it, or bought a baguette sandwich already made in a bakery shop.

For dinner, we ate out at the bistros and cafe that are so prevalent [and good] in Le Marais. We ate in a few nights too, buying some wonderfully easy to prepare frozen foods from Picard.

Well, kodi, as you and our starrs know I can't eat any dairy products or any corn products so I am overly cautious too unless I have prepared the meal myself. And it seems to me that more and more there are people that have problems with various foods including a lot of people that cannot no longer tolerate gluten products.

Just posting again to tell you that you are in my thoughts! I will talk to you after you return home. Many hugs, dear friend.

theflock Jun 18th, 2011 07:52 PM

Kodi, Marinara is located very close to the apartment we stay in while in Paris, so I'll be sure to give it a try. There are a wealth of ethnic restaurants in Paris and some of them are really good. You just need to follow your nose. And, I'm a picky eater too -- I won't even eat fish.

kodi Jun 19th, 2011 04:00 AM

I'm certainly no excpert when it comes to food.. but I really enjoyed my meal at Marinara, but it was also the feeling I got there. Being on my own, some places just don't feel comfortable. Marinara did.

Love , talk to you when I get back.
