>>>The "economy" option on Trenitalia says "reservation change allowed before departure" - does this mean that if we pre-purchased economy tickets for 17:10 that we could show up earlier and take an earlier train without penalty so long as the earlier train had seats available?<<<

No point. I'm not sure where you got "without penalty". The change fee to do that would bump the price to full fare.

***Booking/ticket changes: Changes are allowed once from the issuing date up to train departure.
The departure date or time can be changed only for the same train category or service purchased, subject to a change fee (which is equal to the difference to the corresponding full Base price). The new ticket (called "e;Economy ticket change"e has the same characteristics of the Economy ticket.***

You might look at Italo instead as their economy tickets say they have a 10% change fee. They don't have anywhere near as many departures as Trenitalia so times may not work. They also use Tiburtina in Rome instead of Termini, but Tiburtina is on the metro and is a major bus hub for Rome.

I would spend the whole day in Naples. We spent Easter 2013 there and loved it, such a fascinating city! We had pizza at lunchtime twice with no problems, even on Easter weekend. The later you eat it seemed the longer the lines at certain well known places. It was great though. Sunday was definitely quiet so if that is the day you are there you definitely want to be sure the place you want to go to is open.

Have a fabulous trip!

Thanks everyone. I am very interested in regional foods. The term "foodie" confuses me, so I don't use it, ever. But we would like to eat local specialties, obviously, I assume everyone does (?) Anyhow, thank you much for the food links.

jamikins - very kind of you to share your (very nice!) photos! Those are really great, and between the city itself and the attitude you conveyed while there - I can't wait to go!

Also thanks for the train break-down. It makes perfect sense now, thanks kybourbon. I really didn't quite understand the parameters before!

"Also near the train station, the bakery Attanasio reliably serves their pastries hot, and does a whopping business in the alternate version of sflogliatelle, which has a shortcrust pastry shell rather than thin crunchy leaves of pastry"

I have browsed these forums a ton, and I have read a lot of trip reports. It's all so overwhelming. Choosing our destinations, time spent, etc. was no easy task! So now that it's all set - these more direct bits of advice are great, invaluable really. Thank sandralist, and keep 'em comin' sister

Thank you
