Looking for recent restaurant reviews (Rome, Florence and Venice)

There are lots of posts about restaurants, but many are quite old. Looking for more current reviews if you have been to these cities within the last year.

Grazie!

I strongly suggest you join Zagat's online site. Cost is minimal and I've never been disappointed with the restaurant reviews. Fodors reviews are also good. In Venice, I suggest you look into The Grand Canal. It's the restaurant in the Hotel Monaco. We've been there twice (sitting out on the patio overlooking the canal, of course!) and had superb meals. It's not well known to Americans, but it should be.

I'm in the middle of posting my trip report and have a detailed reviews of some great restaurants in Rome, Florence and Venice. Just click on my name and look for the one that has Donkey in the title!

I recently (April) posted a bunch from Rome in my trip report. Click on my name and look for a trip report about Holy Week in Rome with my parents. The reports are fairly detailed if that is what you are looking for - all price ranges.

My husband and I just returned from 3 1/2 weeks in Italy. Here are some of my suggestions:

Florence:

Za-Za, Piazza Mercato centrale 26/r, ph: 055-215411. We ate here twice during our four day stay in Florence. Especially loved the artichoke appetizer and the steak salad with za-za dressing. The fixed-price lunch was also a good deal. My husband ordered the ravioli and the chicken. Both delicious. Reasonable prices.

La Giostra, Borgo Pinti 10r, Ph: 055-241-341. Wonderful food. They start you off with a large plate of appetizers and some Prosecco so keep that in mind when ordering. Portions are not small. I had a great shrimp salad with avocado and kiwi. We asked for a pasta dish with artichokes so they made one up (since there wasn't one on the menu). It was great. But my favorite was the main dish of goat which they recommended. It was the best! Dinner was expensive but worth it.

Il Latini, Via dei Palchetti 6r, Ph: 055-210-916. This is a fun place. The food is good but you need to be careful not to order too much. They don't give you menus and they just start suggesting dishes and expect you to pick one for each course. My husband and I made the mistake thinking you paid one price whether you ate everything or not, but that is not true (but they don't tell you that). I suggest you share some of the courses so that you can taste everything (and not pay for food you can't eat). Prices are moderate here.

Rome:

Cul de Sac: Piazza di Pasquino 73,Ph: 688-01094 (Piazza Navona). This is a wine bar that also serves food. Favorites were the Greek Salad, Roman Beef Rolls, Pasta with red sauce and Caprese Salad. Our friends liked the chicken liver pate and marinated eggplant. They have many great wines, too. Prices are very reasonable.

Del Pallaro, Largo del Pallaro 15, Ph: 688-01488 (Campo de' Fiori). There is no menu here, you eat what they serve you. But you get lots of good food, wine and dessert for one set price. Menu is too long to write out but you get plenty traditional Italian fare, the price is right and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

L'Orso 80, Via del Orso 33, Ph: 686-4904 (Piazza Navona): The place looks small in front but they have plenty of seating in the back. They aren't real orderly about taking names, you just need to keep telling them the number in your party and you eventually get seated. The pizza was good and the chicken roman style was nice too. The fresh berries over gelato for dessert was heavenly. Moderate prices.

Antica Trattoria da Carlone, Via della Luce 5 (Trastevere). Moderate prices. We ate lunch here. Don't remember the exact meat and pasta we shared, but it was very good. Got the recommendation from another Fodor's food thread.

Panatonni, Viale di Trastevere 53, Ph: 580-0919 (Trastevere). Great pizza. Get there early or you may have a long wait. We ate here on our last trip five years ago and we enjoyed it just as much this time. Reasonable prices.

La Fonte Della Salute, Via Cardinale Marmaggi 4, Ph: 589-7471 (Trastevere). Best gelato we had in Italy.

It's been five years since we were in Venice so I hesitate to recommend anything there. Enjoy your trip! We just LOVED the food in Italy!
