Looking for modern / unusual art galleries in Paris and N. Italy
I'm a big fan of modern art (and an amateur collector).
When I went to Amsterdam, I was excited to see that they're experiencing the same sort of colorful modern art boom that I'm seeing in LA, NYC and other US cities... are there galleries / neighborhoods that I might find the same sort of young artistic spirit in Paris, Rome, Venice and/or Florence?

You can certainly find modern art galleries in Venezia, especially in the Dorsoduro, but you'll have to ferret them out and they will probably be more understated than what you'll find in the cities you mentioned. No doubt there are some to be found in Firenze if you hunt, but if you are a really a fan of modern art, go to Milano.

re Bologna: The Manifattura area of Northwestern Bologna has sprung up in the last 2 or 3 years with galleries.
I know a few artists who show their work in Italy.
I know there are some good galleries in Padua
and this gallery in Udine shows the work of a good friend:

Susan7 is correct- as a collecter, even an amateur one, it's best to check out the artform guide.

These are fantastic suggestions - EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you!
I wish we were traveling closer to Torino - it looks gorgeous. But Bologna is right on our route, so we'll definitely stop there.
And Susan7 - thank you so much for the Artforum link. I can't believe I've never heard of it before!
