Looking for Lucerne hotel for family of 4
 

We'll be staying for 2 nights in Lucerne in early June next summer. Our group consists of 2 families of 4 (4 adults/4 children total). We're typically been looking for apartments but there are no apartments that I can find in Lucerne that hold 8.

So...we're looking for a hotel where each family can stay in one room (4 people per room). Our price range is $200 to $300 per night.

We're pretty flexible on hotel type (modern, quaint, etc) but would prefer it's within easy waking distance of the downtown area (by the bridge). I suppose being in the old town area (north of bridge) would be nice if possible.

We will be arriving/leaving by train so walking distance to the train station might be nice. But we're used to walking a lot so it doesn't have to be directly by the train station.

Any recommendations?

Your price is not clear. Is that $300 per night per room - for which there would be quite a few choices? Or $300 per night for both rooms - which I think may be a problem?

Took a quick look at random dates in June and didn't find any hotels at all for $300 for 2 rooms for 4 people each. The only thing within that budget was a youth hostel.

If that is your budget you may need to stay in a smaller town nearby versus in Lucerne - esp if your kids are older rather than little ones.

Good point. $200 to $300 was per room...not for both rooms.

The children in one family will be 15/18. The other children will be 12/13.

If each family can stay in different rooms in a hotel, is it not an option to have two different apartments close to each other? I don't know your exact dates, but I see several apartments, mostly in the new town, matching your price range for first two days of June.

Actually, a youth hostel might not be a bad idea. Most youth hostels have private rooms or family rooms, as well as dormitories. You may not have private baths, but that's tolerable for a short stay, and it's actually sometimes preferable if you have four people per room.

If you enter your particulars (2 rooms, 4 adults, 4 children) into www.booking.com , you will see various options. As already noted, there's not much that would be within your budget if it's $300 total.

Those ages aren't really "children", they are adults, at least in hotel terms. SO you need to find hotels that will allow four adults in one room.

It isn't $300 total, the OP said it was $300 max per room. I presume that is USD, who knows.

Try the Best Western Krone, very central location and they do have some rooms with one double bed plus two singles for only around 300 CHF (which is about 275 euro).

You are correct that $200 to $300 is USD. Isn't the $ symbol for USD?

We do want our own bathrooms so a hostel isn't something we'd want to do unless there were no other options. We are staying in a "hostel" for one night as we drive through he Austrian Alps but it's very small and our two families will be most of the people using the shared bathroom.

Yeah...I guess I see the point about our kids being adults in hotel terms. I'll keep that in mind as I look. I can tell you they still act like children! :)

You might also check the Ibis Styles or Hotel de la Paix. Both are pretty basic but they might have what you need. Location is good, close to Lion monument and old down shopping/walking street with lots of food options. The lake is also close.

There are also Canadian $, Australian $, Hong Kong $, New Zealand $, Singapore $, Jamaica $, and... Others I don't remember. When people mean US $, they usually write USD or US $.

Agree that while they are YOUR children they are not children in terms of hotels (which refers generally to small children, not adult sized ones). So you need 2 rooms each of which will hold 4 adults. (Many hotels specifically ask for the actual age of each child to figure costs.)

Tourist Hotel, on the edge of the Old Town, manages to pack 4 beds into 325sq foot rooms and even have a door separating the parents & kids.

B&B Bettstat Neudstat has a couple of 600sq foot apartments but they have just a queen and a sofa bed. "An extra twin bed may be available, request in advance".

You could try four rooms at Hotel Alpha. Price is within your budget (I think - not sure of exchange rate from US$). Good location - 10min walk from the station and the river. Clean and pleasant if not luxurious.

I once stayed at the Hotel Alpha, but on my latest visit to Lucerne, it seemed to have gone up quite a lot in price. We found a number of other hotels that were cheaper and more conveniently located.
