Looking for hotels in Rothenburg o.d.t.
Does anybody have any good suggestions for reasonably priced accommodations in Rothenburg o.d.t.? We will be there in mid-August. I have found two different places, Hotel Raidel and Hotel Gerberhaus. If anybody has any comments on these two places, I would love to hear them. Raidel has really good rates and sill looks like it would be an ok place to stay. Also wondering about the location of these two places, are they near the "town" area and walking distance to anything we may want to see and do while visiting the town.?

Thanks :)

J, don't know the hotels you mention, but on our last two trips to Rothenburg, we have stayed at the Roter Hahn. It is a nice hotel just a couple of blocks from the main town square and city hall and across from the Criminal Museum on Obere Schmiedgasse -- a very good location. The staff is friendly and the rates are very reasonable. We paid 85 Euros for our double room back in May. You can check out their hotel at the following website: http://www.rothenburg-online.de/hote...index_eng.html

I have posted about Hotel Gerberhaus before, so have others. All positive I think.
|
the BEST hotel in Rothenburg bar none is the Eisenhut - a very wonderful and proper 4-5 star property. Stay there.
|
I'd use the Tauberstube in nearby Detwang (about a 10-15 min walk from RODT). Family owned, clean, small and reasonable rates.

Visit Rafalsky butchers, just off the main square (downhill ways); lovely cooked meats there.
|
We have stayed at H. Eisenhut at least a 1/2 dozentimes and have never been disappointed. It may be more expensive than the others but the hospitality, friendliness and LOCATION is second to none. Parking is no problm as they will take your car and park it in your garage. We always take one of the suites overlooking the Herrengasse (I think that is right or I may be mixing the name up with Amsterdm! Anyway, it is one of the room overlooking the main stree.) My sister had a room in the bak of the hotel overlooking the valley which was a little more modern but just as nice. Do not accept a room in the annex cross the street. Wonderful breakfast and wonderful hotel

Any more info about Detwang, Tony? Is that the little place you can see from the park in Rothenburg? Sounds like the perfect alternative. Thanks, J.
|
It's very small - thus nothing is going to disturb you. The Tauberstube has a bar/restaurant or, about 40 feet away there is Der Schwarz Lamm (the black lamb) another restaurant.

As far as I know you cannot see it from Rothenburg (unless you join general Tillie in the belltower I suppose).

If you do intend to stay there, mention the name Herr Hughes. Sorted.

I can recommend the Gasthof Kloster Stuble. It's a couple blocks down from the main square but in a quiet location. Nice restaurant and rooms.
|
Check out the Burg-Hotel web site at www.burghotel.rothenburg.de I haven't stayed at this hotel, but they have comments from previous guests posted on their web site. There are a lot of great photos of the medievel hotel.
|
I did a search for "Gerberhaus" (country: Germany), and came up with 18 threads including yours. You might want to give it a shot.
|
Thanks, Tony. I found a website for Der Schwarzes Lamm with wonderful photographs. The Tauberstube doesn't come up except on lists; guess it's too small, but that might make it right for me. Maybe you've got pictures on the net somewhere?
|
We stayed at the Schwarzes Lamm in Detwang this past May and would recommend it. The food is very good. It's a short walk to Rothenburg
|
Is the shortwalk along a highway? Walking path? J-sleeping-in-my-car, you might wonder how Detwang has managed to get into your thread, but there are times when Rothenburg seems so crowded, that the idea of a tiny place just a spit away is very appealing.

Having said that, though, I think I've mentioned somewhere (maybe at this thread?) that if you stay in Rothenburg, be sure to get up really early to walk outside the wall and through the old streets, which at that time are pretty quiet and intimate; a stroll in the evening after the tour buses have left is also good. J.

Hi J
Our family of 4 just returned from our European vacation. We spent 2 nights at the Gasthof goldener Greifen in Rothenburg. The hotel is located just steps away from the main square - they had free parking behind the hotel, a lovely rose-filled garden restaurant, and very large comfortable, clean rooms. We had a corner "room" which was actually 2 connected bedrooms with separate bathroom insuite. Each bedroom had windows and sitting area. We paid 124 Euros/night which seemed pretty reasonable to us. We loved it! Close to everything. In Rothenburg I would highly recommend staying in the old area of town - the atmosphere is wonderful. Also check out the Night Watchman's tour (8:00pm nightly in English) - the fellow conducting the tour was great! Very interesting & informative. Don't forget to visit Kathe Wolfart's Christmas shop - it's truly fabulous (easy to spend lots of money in there!). Enjoy your trip!

Hi again
The Gasthof has a web site with lots of pictures of their place:
gasthof-greifen.rothenburg.de
|
another vote for Hotel Gerberhaus. Nice location, nice accomodations, very near access to a Wall walk entrance.
|
We, myself and 3 kids, just returned from europe and stayed in Rothenburg just last Mon. We stayed at the Burg Hotel. For the 4 of us the price was 189E. We had a 2 room unit facing farmlan with a balcony atop the city wall. That is the only unit wilth a balcony. The proprietress was wonderful and spoke english well. It is a little difficult to find (we actually foun it by accident) so get directions beforehand. it is also non-smoking.
|
JW, sorry no pictures but I can assure you it looks like a typical Bavarian gasthof. My family have been staying there since the early 1980's and always use it when we're in the area.

J- There are 2 web sites that I use for Rothenburg. You might want to check them out for maps, hotel locations, prices, availability, etc.
www.Rothenburg.de
www.Rothenburg-online.de
Have a good time!
