Looking for honeymoon destination

I am looking for somewhere for our honeymoon this September, we live in Los Angeles but are originally from England so will be having our wedding there. I am hoping to find somewhere to go that is "en-route" back to LA, we were thinking about Costa Rica or somewhere in central america or possibly a cruise in the Caribbean but I have heard that September is the rainy / hurrican season there so not very appealing. We have been looking at Madeira or one of the Canary Islands or possibly somewhere in the Mediterranean, would like to stay somewhere away from the tourist hordes, would rather rent a cottage in a fishing village than stay in a hotel. Not that bothered about beaches but somewhere on the coast where there is the chance to swim, (I hear Madeira has no beaches) and other activities hiking, sight seeing, possibly rock climbing or diving or something else exciting rather than laying on a beach all day ??? Any ideas would be very gratefully recieved, ideally we would like to go somewhere that is easy to get to from England then travel on to USA from. Hope that's not too much to ask! Thankyou!

The Azores. And I'm not kidding. Really.

Have you thought about Scilly?

As you've posted this on the Europe forum I take it you're not interested in Bermuda?

Sheila - I looked into The Azores, they look lovely, I don't know anything about those islands. Where would you recommend? Are they hard to get to, do you have to fly to and from there from Lisbon? I have heard mixed reviews of TAP, the airline that flies to there and Madeira.

Frances - I am open to anything that sounds wonderful and is not ridiculously expensive. What is Bermuda like that time of year? Where could we go?

Thanks for your feedback!

Sorry about the delay-I missed this.
I'm afraid though that I know very little about Bermuda. I suggested is as somewhere en route from England to the States.
Its expensive to reach there from the U.K. and so a stop on the way may be a little cheaper.
Let us know what you choose.

I love the Azores. Sao Jorge is my favourite island, but Sao Miguel is better for beaches and is interesting. The walking is great, the scenery is lovely and people are very friendly. There are few tourists, and most of them seem to be visiting relatives. I also enjoyed the whale watching. There is slightly more rain in September. I flew out via Lisbon, but there are a few direct flights from Gatwick and Manchester, and some flights go to USA. See:

I don't really know, I'm afraid. I have one friend from here who's done a holiday there, and loved it; and one friend from here (Betty Ann) who stopped off on a cruise.

Can anyone else fill in the gaps?

Congratulations on the upcoming wedding. Bermuda is a beautiful island and you can moped the entire island and feel very safe. Very little crime there. I am biased because I also honeymooned there many years ago. September would be gorgeous there but I need to caution you that it is in the Atlantic, and it is hurricane season in September. Unless a hurricane blows through there the weather is great with a short rain every day, as in most tropical areas. One never knows when you book in advance when a hurricane can develop. Best of luck to you.

Went to Bermuda in early sept and I have never been so hot in my life. Even shopping, a lot of the stores had no A/C. If you went in late Sept, I think it would be fine. The beaches are beautiful. Since you will be in Europe anyway, why not a european destination?
