Looking for good books to read for A'dam & Germany!

Leaving *this* Thursday- I'm buying The Diary of Anne Frank on audio today. Any other book recs on this area, especially quick reads? Thanks!

For Holland the best intro to life and culture is "The UnDutchables" by Colin White and Laurie Boucke.

Also for Holland, The Coffee Trader by David Liss.

You'll be able to buy plenty of English language books in Amsterdam: you might like to look out for the autobiography of Miep Gies (one of the people who helped shelter the Franks). Any of the Van der Valk detective stories by Nicolas Freeling might appeal.

If you change your mind about quick reads, they do require one to think, but many of Gunter Grass' books; e.g., Crabwalk, My Century, The Flounder, Too Far Afield, Headbirths or the Germans are Dying Out.
