Looking for Dolomite ideas. Thanks, Jim Cantwell Moltrasio

We are traveling from Moltrasio on Lake Como and hoping to find the perfect village in the Dolomites as a base to ski in the region. We understand that the region is a mix of German and Italian but we prefer Italian cuisine. Do any of you have advice as to which village and area of the Dolomites would be best for great skiing and Italian cuisine.

Yeah, nobody is going to attack you because you are "new" either

We were very happy with Castleroto, Castelruth in German, near several ski areas in the Dolomites. There seemed to be both German and Italian food available, though it has been so long that my memory of the food is hazy.

On the high end, with wonderful Italian food available, is Madonna de Campilgio. While it is South of the Dolomites, it has access to many well developed ski areas, has superb restaurants, (try the pasta with Porcini mushrooms at Pappagallo) and many nice shops.

Hi Jim,

First I have to say we've never been to the Dolomites in winter and that we don't ski.

You'll find Italian cuisine everywhere. I wouldn't be concerned with that aspect of your stay at all.

I'd suggest a village in either the Val Gardena or Alta Badia. Val Gardena is basically made up of Ortisei (town), St. Christina and Selva (both villages). These 3 are about 5 minutes drive from one to the next, with St. Christina being in the middle. The Alta Badia is basically Corvara (a town, more or less), Colfosco, La Villa and San Cassiano (villages more or less). We stayed at the Garni Ariston in St. Christina, Val Gardena in 10/03. We stayed at the Ciasa Montanara in La Villa, Alta Badia in 10/06 and 9/09. While both places we stayed are very nice, we just love the Montanara and the Alta Badia.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I had heard that Ortisei and the Val Gardena are special. I'll do some research. We were hoping that day trips wouldn't be out of reach to visit Bolzano and Trento.

Hi,

Day trip to Trento, I wouldn't know about that.

We visited Bolzano from our stay in the Val Gardena. Bolzano is under an hour from Ortisei. The old town of Brixen/Bressanone is also worth a visit. This is also about 45 minutes from Ortisei. We visited Brixen/Bressanone from La Vila, Alta Badia.
