As always you need an insider: as examples:
1st Class AA 777 DFW/FRA Sept '02 $2000.
Business BA 777 DFW/OPO stop LGW July '04 $1008.
I'll never do coach to Europe again, but my perspective is a bit different.

I found this package last night while I was looking for something else. It offers airfare plus six nights in a 4* place, plus some other things too, for under $1000 per person. It looks great to me. I'd do it if I weren't already doing something else.

And I hope you'll post about what you end up doing.

That's pretty good, post-9/11, mikemo...

I did better, ONCE, thanks in part to Don t the Cheap Flights Forum on www.eurotrip.com

Business class (NW), EVV-FCO, $899 (maybe there was a $15 fee added?, I can't remember), May 2001 - - got SIX seats at this price!

Best wishes,

Rex

I noticed the same thing today. My sister said why don't we go to London the end of Aug. Cannot find cheap airfare. I will let you know. I have already checked United, American, Travelocity, etc.....all over $800. Amazing that the fares are so high when I just saw something to fly to LA for $139.

Mikemo: Where did you find that BA bus.
class fare in June '04 ($1008)? Was this
round-trip? I also need to get to London from LAX in June and need good airfare
but would pop for business at the rate you quoted. Please reply!

Follow-up to CarolA & WillTravel I read an article in WSJ with a similar theme, fares to Europe will never be very cheap this summer in spite of the high value of Euro vs. dollar but there will be some bargains on domestic flights.

Boonie,
That figure is correct and for RT travel. Unfortunately, it's no longer available. Continental had a $1700. Bus RT from IAH recently.
The WSJ article implied that the eventual empty high-priced seats to Europe will be "dumped" at the last minute this summer, but that means you have to have flexible plans. This is survival time pricing for most international carriers on routes with little discount competition.

Right now there is a sale for certain cities like Baltimore, Boston etc from http://www.icelandair.com/.

IcelandAir does not serve Chicago though.

If you go to British Airways or Virgin Atlantic's websites, sometimes you can find better deals than on the mass sites like Orbitz. I found my San Francisco / London flight on ba.com for $514.

Btw, is it just me or does the Orbitz site seem to be full of u-no-what? Everytime I do a search for an int'l flight, I see cheap rates on their site, but when I sign in to try and purchase the ticket, I get a message that says my fare has increase by like $300 to $500. Every time!

I booked tickets from San Francisco to London for late June on Air Canada for $515 per RT ( we are also a family of 4) Today, the cheapest flight is on Virgin for $624. My advice is to check expedia several times a day. Tues, Wed and Thurs are the days you are most likely to find a good fare. $800 is too much. I woudn't pay that. My final destination is Rome. Air fare to Rome from SF hasn't dropped below $1000 since Novemeber. So I bought a cheap Ticket to London, then a seperate ticket from London to Rome for $175. I paid less than $700 per ticket and am happy with my deal. Be creative and you'll get a good ticket. PS Also try to travel on off peak days like Tues/Wed. This can really reduce your fare.

I think we are all still in agreement -the fares are schizophrenic and real bargains pop up for a few minutes a couple of times a week.
Be Diligent!

Golfergal, Sorry to take so long to reply. The www.France.com fare was $592 each for my husband and me. We are going in October and returning in November. It's Los Angeles (LAX) to Nice (NCE) airports.

You don't discover what airline it is until you purchase the tickets so it's a little scary. I knew the schedules and just took a chance. We're on Air France. At least the food should be good!

Good luck. Hope you find (or found) something.

I'm paying 790.00 (incl. tax), going from Washington, DC to London middle of June, returning from Basel/Switzerland via Frankfurt back to Washington (all non-stop on United and Lufthansa) early July. I got this rate via my travel agent who beat all the usual web sites.

We bought tickets in December 03 for our upcoming May vacation to Switzerland. We'll be flying from Raleigh to Bern. Found tickets for $400 each on airlineconsolidator.com. It's not a direct flight, however, so it all depends on your preference.

SalB - Thanks for the reponse. We ended up changing our plans. We got JFK to Milan for $463 the week of labor day through a NWA/KLM sale. We decided to do the French Riveria another year and take the Italy deal. Have a great trip!
