Looking for chair lifts and cable cars in southern Bavaria

My husband and I honeymooned in Interlaken, Switzerland and did a lot of hiking. There seemed to be an unending supply of chair lifts, cable cars, funiculars and other ways to get one up and down the mountains.

We'll be visiting southern Bavaria with our three kids (17, 15 and 12) in a few weeks, and I'm pretty sure there are similar things there, but I don't know where they are. Your help in finding cable cars and chair lifts would be greatly appreciated, esp. in the Mittenwald/Garmisch area. Thanks!!!

Number One: The Zugspitze.

Hello misisypie

The accessibility of the mountaintops in Switzerland is absolutely amazing, isn't it.

We'll also be exploring the southern Bavaria region in a few weeks and will be staying a couple nights in Garmisch. We've not been up the Zugspitze, but from what I've read, it sounds terrific.

Happy travels!

Hi missypie,

From Mittenwald, you have two.

The Kranzberg chairlift takes you up to a nice little peak with a fabulous restaurant at the top. Best wursts around right there (and the view ain't bad either)!! Then you can join all the others taking the trail downhill.

The Karwendelbahn is a cable car up the Karwendel, on the other side of town.

Have fun!

Wow, TuckH, it sounds perfect! Does it get supercrowded in the summer, such that we would want to try to be some of the first ones up?

Yes - that's what we did. Had lunch at the top. (Bring a jacket.)

After the descent, we enjoyed a lovely hike (more like a 'walk') around the Eibsee with glorious views of the summit.
